On the heels of Black Friday and Cyber Monday comes Giving Tuesday, a reminder to support local charities. Their oft-overlooked role in supporting communities fills the gaps between government and individual resources. Need has increased since the Recession, but so has giving; Americans donated a record high $373.25 billion in 2015, according to Giving USA’s annual report.

TRUMP: Other priorities
We all want government to change and here are some ideas for President-elect Trump from my forgotten corner of the country. For many students, going immediately from high school to college is the natural order of things. That wasn’t the case for LaCheale Linscott — at least, not right away. Maybe she’d go into real estate and work for her family’s business, she thought, but she wouldn’t jump straight into college.
LIVING IN BUBBLES
Are we increasingly afraid to seek other perspectives?
READING: The golden key
I very much did appreciate your editorial last Sunday. I think you hit the nail on the head. If a family reads to their children and helps them learn to read before they enter school then the child will do well in school no matter the type of school, public or private. Millions of dollars have been spent on studying schooling and hundreds of suggestions have been made, yet our schools seem to be stuck in a rut. I think partly because our emphasis has been on the wrong end of the schooling. We seem to concentrate more on high school because we know that if we can help a student perform better in high school we will see immediate results in overall test scores.
Trepidation over Trump
Like it or not, a licensed real estate broker will soon be in the White House as commander in chief. Since the election, there has been much speculation about the future of our country but recent developments provide some insight into the future of the housing market. Soon to be President Trump has set the nation on its ear and the reaction has been wide and varied. The stock market plunged, then rallied and bond rates rose, affecting mortgage interest rates which followed suit. Mortgage rates follow loosely the yield on the 10-year Treasury bond.

It’s almost hard to believe, but areas that are currently reporting major drought conditions experienced massive flooding earlier this year. Normally, we see these huge 500-year or 1,000-year flood events less than once per year. You all are worried about holding the bag? Giving thanks to First Neighbors
It must have been hard. To be surprised by foreign-tongued strangers arriving on your shores in foreboding ships exceeding both experience and imagination, armed with weapons far more terrifying and powerful than your own. To watch them settle permanently upon your land — an act that must have felt so threatening, and yet... The First Americans near Plymouth Colony brought food to those 50 pilgrims, joining to celebrate the harvest, hands outstretched in friendship. That spirit of common humanity is the lesson of Thanksgiving, which 90 Wampanaog Indians first shared with settlers in 1621. The tragedies which followed we acknowledge with sadness, but won’t dwell upon today. Today we simply give thanks, and celebrate Native American Heritage Month.

LUNCH: An anonymous gift
Sunday afternoon, I called my friend, Florence Morrison, to see if she would like to go to Dragon House for some Chinese food. We were having a good visit, getting caught up on our families. When we got ready to leave, our server informed us that the couple sitting across from us had paid for our meal. What a beautiful surprise! So, whoever you were, nice couple, thank you for your kind thoughtfulness. It was so unexpected. Bless you for your kindness. We wish you and everyone else a very Happy Thanksgiving.

A cure for the 'common' headache
Headaches mean big business, and this is especially the case when the cause underlying the headache pain goes undetected and therefore the headache pain is not successfully treated. Drugs are not a cure; they are not like antibiotics which actually kill bacteria that are causing the sickness. Drugs only mask the headache pain symptoms until the drug wears off, and they can cause other problems and even make the pain worse so one has to take even higher doses of drugs.

Pelvic health: Body balance after baby
A new baby, there is nothing better! Snuggling them, loving them and nurturing them becomes your new life. Suddenly the aches and pains of pregnancy and delivery are forgotten. But don't kid yourself this is no little feat that your body just went through to make this precious new addition. Your body goes through an amazing transformation to make your baby and if you are nursing them, you will still have hormones in your body after the birth of the baby. No wonder your body seems a little bit different or odd in its behavior. No wonder you have stiff shoulders, a cranky back or hips that pop around when you move. Maybe your bladder is a little leaky with laughing, sneezing or coughing. Maybe you have pain with intercourse or are completely disinterested in sex at all. Maybe you are constantly constipated after baby and you are wondering why because you never were before. Well we know what it's like and you are not alone.
Talk turkey and family health this Thanksgiving
Chronic disease affects many Americans. There are some contributing factors we can control such as nutrition, physical activity, tobacco use, etc.; however, there are also risk factors we cannot control such as age, gender, and family history. Most people have increased risks for chronic diseases such as cancer, heart disease, and diabetes because it runs in the family genes. Health conditions such as high cholesterol, high blood pressure, and osteoporosis can also be passed among relatives. Not only do genes play a factor, but lifestyles, behaviors, and environments, which influence the risk for chronic diseases, are often the same or similar among family members.

Cannabis debate is all about freedom
I appreciate the opportunity to weigh in on the cannabis debate. Step back 100 years ago when our country had a thriving cannabis hemp industry. As a medicine cannabis was one of the most frequently prescribed therapies for a wide range of ailments, including pain, bronchial difficulties, stomach issues, anxiety, and opiate addiction. As a textile, cannabis hemp was the staple for both military and civilian needs. Canvas, hemp rope, and hemp-seed oil lubricants, are a few examples.

ELECTION: Of gloom and glory
The presidential election is over. Thank goodness! But this is not the time to gloat or let gloom overshadow the fact that we are all free Americans, with exceptional liberties. Those who gloat may become those of gloom, if expectations fall short of their desires. Those of gloom may find that many of their desires become reality. Today, we are a politically divided nation with one candidate winning the popular vote and the other winning the majority of votes in the Electoral College. Until the Constitution is amended, it stands as written and Donald Trump is our president-elect.
Happy National Entrepreneurship month!
November is National Entrepreneurship Month, which in my world is the next best thing to a national holiday. Entrepreneurs are the backbone of American business. They take risks with their ideas, money and reputations, believing that their efforts will pay off, even when no one else has confidence in them.
STUDENT: Election perspective
I am a student at Canfield Middle School, and I was closely following this year’s election. I know many people in Idaho are rejoicing at Donald Trump’s election, but plenty of kids at Canfield are not. Many of us thought Trump was just a joke, comedy relief in the election. We didn’t think of him as the leader of our country. We’ve been raised with powerful women in media, with kindness being a virtue to strive for and with the belief that people of any race or religion are equal to everyone else and should be welcomed, not discriminated against.
COLUMN: Hail, Fakebook!
Sholeh Patrick is 100 percent correct when she said “people are news lazy” in her Tuesday column. Yet people are binging on social media to complain about the somewhat fact-check accountable TV or print news media when (according to Pew research) 44 percent of Americans only get their news from Facebook? That’s right. Facebook. Or is it Fakebook?

Many months of low, low interest rates may have encouraged some complacency with groups of real estate buyers seeing no compulsion to act but that may have changed last week. Agents report hearing concerns of buyers who are feeling a sense of urgency due to an increase of four tenths of a percent in the 30-year mortgage interest rate over last month. Of course, the Great Depression started in 1929 and lasted until 1942, when war created jobs for millions of Americans at last (although at the same time, hundreds of thousands of Americans were killed in that war). Just saying.

Be kind
Friday morning I take a walk. Visiting my sister in the town of my birth, I walk by the house I was raised in, the alley shortcut I took coming home from school on rainy afternoons and the pool I cooled off in, on warm summer days. I walk by my kindergarten classroom and see the same slide I played on 48 years ago. I think of Ms. Baker, my kindergarten teacher. I close my eyes and faintly smell her rosy perfume, hear her high-pitch voice reminding me to play nicely with Gener Carr and am reminded of her simple guidance to, “Be kind.”

ELECTION: Buck up, Democrats
To those whimpering over the results of the recent election I extend my condolences for the loss of your pacifiers. If I may offer a suggestion: Exhibit a dash of maturity as we conservatives did when you forced that snake-oil salesman, Obama, down our throats. Trump may be able to undo some of his worst absurdities and that will benefit even you. At least we can all rejoice over the defeat of that power-mad incompetent, Hillary, although I fear she will continue to annoy us for at least another decade.
ELECTION: Colleges not helping
Those of us blessed with even a little common sense are ecstatic with the results of the election. However, I am very worried and disturbed by the number of mentally challenged Democrats participating in the destructive demonstrations around the country. The fact that many of these demonstrators are reportedly college educated individuals only confirms my long held belief that the liberal “educators” in our schools and colleges are contributing to the demise of our country by infecting our young people with ideas that have no rational basis in fact.

Aging and strength training
Getting older can be amazing and rewarding in many aspects, but it can also be one of the most depressing realizations adults will face in life. The physical nature of aging can lead to loss of strength, muscle mass and mobility. In fact, as we age we tend to develop sedentary behaviors that lead to the onset of many unfortunate health conditions.
Educate our educators
In spite of the sincere efforts of our K-12 educators in the state of Idaho, there is a lack of student mental stimulation, therefore, students are not motivated toward further learning. From my perspective, our teachers have the student’s best interest at heart, and they do the best they can. I suspect the crux of teachers’ failed attempts of producing students eager to further their education, once graduated from high school, lies indirectly with administration. I feel sure the Idaho students, had they received excellent learning skills from K-12 grades, would not be at the bottom of the barrel according to the U.S. educational evaluation system.

CHURCH: Speak up, leaders
Another letter Sunday about the pastor at Candlelight expressing his opinion on the platforms of the candidates in this year’s election. None of this will sway anyone on either side, but this has gone on too long. It’s about time the leaders of our churches, under siege for AT LEAST the last eight years from government sources and people in the community who disagree with the beliefs, spoke up. Look what happened to The Little Sisters of the Poor and their hospital, for which they asked for and received NO government funding. They had to spend thousands, maybe more than that, defending their freedom to provide or deny services to patients, who, by the way, can receive these same services from Planned Parenthood, or other sources…public hospitals? This was done to “comply with the standards of Obamacare.”

Their leaders had been caught off guard by the sudden entrance of the People's Republic of China into the five-month old Korean War. The Americans were surrounded, outnumbered, and at risk of annihilation. The two-week battle that followed is among the most momentous in U.S. history. It helped set the course of American foreign policy in the Cold War and beyond. And it remains one of the most renowned in Marine Corps annals.”

The skinny on steel cut oats
It seems like nearly every week the media presents a new SUPERFOOD: an item that has gained attention and is heavily advertised. As part of the superfood craze, media reports that these foods MUST be eaten to: achieve optimal health, lose vast amounts of weight in a short amount of time, lose belly fat, gain muscle, have glowing skin and hair, gain energy, and basically become SUPER human! Although we can’t pinpoint foods as “superfoods,” we can talk about properties of foods and their proposed benefits. As a side note, the reason foods should not be called “superfoods” is because not one food can cure ailments. Foods work together in the body to enhance their benefits. Therefore, it is so important to include a variety of healthy foods to reduce risk for chronic disease.

Vintage still matters
The growing conditions in any given year can vary wildly by region and versus previous or subsequent years. We understand too though the argument of buying producer over vintage. There are some wineries and winemakers who figure out a way to make good wine no matter how challenging the conditions. Even for this top tier of producers though and more so for all the rest of the winemakers vintage matters, it is why wines taste different from every year. They may still all be good wines but they will be different, and therefore may not appeal to your palate in the same way.
Regional cooking
Cooking is scientific, culturally specific and artistic. The manner in which a chef or home cook manipulates food creates a feast, quick meal, celebration or aberration. An onion can be “bloomed” and deep-fried to create a greasy, flour-fried heart stopping death bomb or braised then caramelized topping a bison burger that turns the traditional American burger into something special.

Veterans in Idaho's gap deserve health coverage
This Veterans Day, let’s pause to consider ways that we can better care for the very Americans who have cared for us and our country by serving in our armed forces. One way that we, as Idahoans, can act to do this right away is by providing health care coverage to those who are excluded by other programs, including thousands of veterans who live right here in Idaho.

The opening narration of the PBS American Experience “The Battle of the Chosin” airing this month ... “In the last days of November 1950, twelve-thousand men of the First Marine Division, along with a few thousand Army soldiers, found themselves trapped high in the mountains of North Korea, near a reservoir called Chosin.

Why Benghazi is suddenly back in the news and a hot topic once again, even though millions of dollars of taxpayers money was spent on GOP hearings, ad nauseam? Why Donald Trump, an obnoxious, obscene and obsolete example of mankind, and a product of obsessive obstructionism by the GOP, is the favored of Wikileaks via Russia (who is determined to interfere in our election)?

I get worried when I read about people deciding not to vote because they do not like either candidate. I would urge them to realize that one of these two people running will be elected president regardless of your individual action and it is the most important election we have had in years, if not ever. Failure to vote means you have given up one of the most important and sacred duties a citizen has. Many people have died obtaining and retaining this privilege. I am not enthusiastic about either candidate either but since one or the other will be elected regardless of my vote I want my vote to count so if we elect a disaster I can say I did or did not support it.

'Purge' is no excuse to lose control
When it comes to films’ horror genre, I’m an ostrich. Head in the sand, until it goes away. Life is tense enough; I don’t need to experience more and call it entertainment.
Christmas tree hunting
The rocky, moss-covered logging road is covered with yellow needles released from Western Larch as the forest prepares for a long, snowy winter. Green trees that camouflage as pines during the warmth of summer change rapidly during short autumn days. Needles lose color; turn light green then flaxen before slowly dropping to the ground like golden snowflakes.
CHURCH: Right to endorse
I’ve been a disgruntled Christian for several years now. I’ve been frustrated with the accommodating, worldly Christian church. They’re the ones that are afraid to step on anyone’s toes. Afraid to offend or make uncomfortable. The goal of the leaders of these churches seems to be numbers. To make everyone feel warm and fuzzy by the time the “show” is over. In that, there’s a good chance the attendees will return.

Winter blues - greens, reds and yellows too!
We call them “Winter Blues” — feeling kind of low and down and out. “Depression,” grey skies and the winter illnesses all collectively result in feeling a little dispirited. Instead of feeling woeful this time of year, why don’t we circumvent this melancholy time period and strengthen our resolve — mentally and physically. We can.
TRUMP: Words and hypocrites
Having spent many years in the Navy, I can tell you that our so-called congressmen and senators are nothing but a bunch of hypocrites. If any of them had served in the armed forces, I am sure that they at one time or another had a pin-up from Playboy magazine in their locker, like 90 percent of the GIs did. They cannot convince me that they have never said or done exactly what they are so upset about what Mr. Trump was supposed to have said. So to make themselves look like good little boys they find it easier to jump ship, rather than own up to being a man.
Can chiropractic help the post-surgical patient?
Failed back surgery syndrome (FBSS) is not a true syndrome but a generalized term that is often used to describe the condition of patients who have not had a successful result with back or spine surgery and experience continued pain after surgery.

TRUMP: For many reasons
Our family has personally been affected by the so called Affordable Care Act (Obamacare) and our monthly premium with Blue Cross Idaho started Jan, 2014 at approximately $363 monthly. The Sept 1, 2016 premium was approximately $559. Doing the math I get a 54 percent increase!
TRUMP: Darwin was wrong
I used to believe in Darwin’s Theory of Evolution but with Donald Trump’s campaign for president I am having my doubts. Mr. Trump does not appear to have evolved mentally beyond the level of the cave man. In his own words, if he wants a woman he just thumps her and drags her off to his cave. So much for morality and family values.

MILAN: She builds bridges

CANCER: Lamenting the dead
While I am encouraged and applaud each story of a breast cancer survivor in the Coeur d’Alene Press, I am heartsick over the tragic loss of dear ones who have not survived. I especially grieve over the very recent loss of a fabulous woman whose obit was printed just a week ago on Oct. 22. Please consider highlighting the heroic and significant life of someone who died of metastatic breast cancer during the month of October, even as survivor stories abound to give courage to those who are recently diagnosed, are undergoing treatment and who hope for a long life — and which additionally urge all women to do self-breast exams and have regular exams and mammograms by their medical providers.
ELECTION: Pick the buffoon
My fellow voters, the time has come to elect a person who will occupy the seat of highest officer in the land. I ask you, do you want that seat to be filled by an arguably loud-mouthed buffoon and womanizer, or arguably traitorous person who is directly responsible for our American citizens’ deaths in Benghazi, a proven liar on a host of issues including destruction of thousands of government emails with a gargantuan cover-up starting with the sitting occupier of the Oval Office who happens to be in charge of the two highest law enforcement agencies in government? Then there’s the matter of ISIS! Their existence would be minimal had it not been for two of the aforementioned!
BANDUCCI: Represents entire county
This letter is to let you know that you do have a choice this upcoming election day when it comes to the NIC Board of Trustees. Mr. Todd Banducci and is being challenged by Mr. Greg Gfeller Even though this seat is a “non-partisan” seat, we all know that each candidate is backed by groups with opposing viewpoints. Mr. Gfeller ran as a Republican for the Idaho State House of Representatives two years ago against two other gentlemen and came in last place. We all believed that he was a Republican. Now he is running for this seat and is backed by a left-leaning establishment.

Coffee, healthy or not?
Whether coffee is healthy for you or not, more than half of Americans over the age 18 are consuming coffee each day. According to the National Coffee Association’s National Coffee Drinking Trends 2015 report, 27 percent households own single-cup brewing machines which is up from 7 percent in 2011. Over the years, coffee has been marketed as having health benefits, but also has been deemed unhealthy by many. You often hear people say they want to quit drinking coffee due to the caffeine content. So, is coffee healthy or not? As a registered dietitian and coffee drinker myself, I want to know what the latest research has to say.

Heart disease, stroke and your teeth
Gum disease (periodontal disease) can cause strokes and heart disease as well as tooth loss. All of these are expensive. Go to the American Heart Association web site and read the study entitled “Periodontal Disease and Atherosclerotic Vascular Disease: Does the Evidence Support an Independent Association?” That is, does gum disease cause these problems by themselves?
Affordable health care
This has been quite a year when it comes to health care for all of us. With the presidential election days away and everyone trying to decide who is best for our country, this "little thing" called the Affordable Care Act (ACA) or better known as Obamacare, keeps coming up for those of us in the midst of health care.

BANDUCCI: He will benefit NIC
This letter is being written to enthusiastically endorse Mr. Todd Banducci, candidate for the position of Trustee of the North Idaho College (NIC) Board of Trustees. He is the president of Falcon Investments & Insurance, Inc. and serves our country as a Major in the Air Force Reserves. CLINTON: Headed toward ruin
The latest statement of innocence by Secretary Clinton regarding her illegal server has turned into a demand to put all of the new information obtained by the FBI on the table. Where was her willingness to put it all on the table when it was first discovered that she misled the American people by lying over and over to us? She deceived us by the fraudulent destroying of e-mails, smart phones, and illegal servers.
VOTE: Time for a new direction
There has been much talk of civility or lack of recently, these are key words used by the left to infer against their opposing side. The Left’s idea of civility is that everyone must agree with them or they are uncivil, but we have seen what the paid protesters and BLM have done recently, hardly civil. Benjamin Franklin said “We have a Republic if we can keep it.” A democracy is nothing more than mob rule, and who rules a mob, mobsters. Sound familiar? Yes passions are running high as in a few days we will be voting for a new direction or not. If America does not change direction, I believe we will be lost as a society our Founders envisioned, and our children will have to pay for it.
Random murder unsettling
The power of wine
Long before we ever had the glimmer of an idea of opening the dinner party Mary and I entertained. A lot. The inspiration for the shop was commentary from our guests that “you guys throw the best dinner parties.” It was a great compliment, and we very much enjoyed doing it. Mary normally focused on setting the table and creating a wonderful mood with everything from art to music to flowers. My focus was on the food and wine and together they worked, we had a blast as did our guests, and they enjoyed the total experience.
VOTE: But not for party
I’ve never had a “trump” card, nor would I bet a penny on this one. A recent mailing with smiling faces of five candidates, Mike Crapo, Raul Labrador, Bob Nonini, Ron Mendive, and Don Cheatham, asks Idahoans to vote for them and for Donald Trump, whose picture seems to show a forced smile. My oh my; it’s certainly difficult to think these five place themselves in the same deck of cards as Trump. He has an ego that Dr. Freud would probably love to examine!
LETTER: Right on, Asa
I was so impressed by a letter submitted by Asa Gray. She is a young woman voting in her first presidential election and has clearly done her homework on choosing a candidate. I heard Evan McMullin on the radio being interviewed by Glenn Beck. He was so well informed on every matter Glenn Beck brought up. He’s my choice as well. Asa, don’t let others shame you for voting for Evan. You are not wasting your vote, you are making a statement. I hope he gets enough votes to shake things up.
VOTE: Elect these candidates
On Nov. 8, let’s put highly qualified citizens in office that will ensure positive movement ahead in difficult times by electing the following: Legislature, Luke Malek; North Idaho College Trustees, Greg Gfeller and Brad Murray; Sheriff, Ben Wolfinger.
Ask your audiologist: Free hearing help and repairs for the holidays!
Every holiday season I give back to the community by giving away a free pair of digital hearing aids to a deserving individual. I will also provide free in house repairs by appointment and bringing in a copy of this article. Everyone deserves to hear during the holidays! The holidays are usually the most important family gatherings of the year. Many people with hearing loss get left out of family conversations around the dinner table if they do not have hearing aids or if their hearing aid(s) are broken.
HILLARY: She's just evil
When we think of evil personified we conjure up images of sinister, ugly, weird faces like Frankenstein, zombies, werewolves, or a red faced devil with horns.
Breast cancer survivor: 30 years and counting
My journey began when I was a young of 26 years old. My son was 18 months old and I began to notice a discolored fluid from my breast. I really didn’t give it a serious thought. I went to my Ob-Gyn and we did cytology slides on the fluid. To our surprise they came back with cancer cells on the pathology report.
AMADOR: Respect for all
In my line of work I have the opportunity to interact and work with people across this community and they bring with them all manners of political leanings and opinions. While the presidential election has certainly helped create an image of a very polarized country, I can attest that there are good, responsible and caring individuals in both parties. Luckily for the people of Coeur d’Alene and District 4, one of those good, responsible and caring individuals happens to call our community home. Paul Amador, the Republican candidate for House Seat 4B is a person who our community should be proud to send to Boise as our State Representative. Paul brings years of experience in education, but more importantly he brings an attitude of respect for all viewpoints and a passion for improving Idaho. Voting is probably our most fundamental right in our American form of governance, I encourage you to exercise your right to vote on Nov. 8. I encourage you to vote for Paul Amador for House Seat 4B.
TRUMP: To stop communism
Progressive, liberal, socialist, leaning towards communism pretty much describes most of American politics at present. Our two-party system Republicans are only a half cent’s difference than Democrats. A lot of Republicans refuse to support Trump, no guts, they don’t want to lose money, or lobbyists’ money, etc. Same with Democrats. Both parties are almost a mirror image of each other!
CRAPO: Few good choices
Today I received a flyer in the mail from the office of Sen. Mike Crapo, who is running for re-election this year. The flyer stated that he is supporting increased efforts to stop domestic violence. I applaud him for that. They need help.
HEARN: He solves problems
Tom Hearn will bring a much-needed trait to his role as our State Representative: creative problem solver! His background as a social worker has helped hundreds, perhaps thousands, of our neighbors solve their individual problems. And his work on state and school district boards has shown an ability to find consensus in group processes that should be invaluable in working across political aisles to find solutions, rather than political posturing.

My wife, Holly, and I spend some of the winter months in the Palm Springs, Calif., area, also known as Gucci Gulch.
