Plenty of opportunities to honor and remember
Memorial Day ceremonies are scheduled today throughout the area, honoring those who gave their lives while serving in the military.
COEUR d’ALENE
• 9 a.m. | Veterans Pavilion at McEuen Park, Front Avenue. Hosted by Coeur d’Alene Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 889. Event will include a wreath ceremony, ringing of the Veterans Bell and speeches, including one from Vietnam veteran Bob Martin, the Coeur d’Alene VFW’s incoming commander.
• 10 a.m. | St. Thomas Cemetery, E. Sherman Ave. VFW Post 889 will preside over the ceremony.
• 11 a.m. | Forest Cemetery, 101 N. Government Way. Ceremony and speeches will take place near the Civil War statue. One of the speakers will be Bob Martin of VFW Post 889.
• 2 p.m. | Coeur d’Alene Memorial Gardens on North Government Way. Ceremony performed by the Pappy Boyington Detachment 966 of the Marine Corps League. Speaker: Post Falls City Councilor Kerri Thoreson.
HAYDEN
• 10 a.m. | Honeysuckle Beach, Hayden. Ceremony will include laying of a memorial wreath honoring those service men and women lost at sea. There will also be a prayer, rifle salute and taps.
• 11 a.m. | Veterans Memorial Plaza, Hayden City Hall, 8930 N. Government Way. Event will be sponsored by the City of Hayden Veterans Commission. Ceremony will include a presentation of colors by the Hayden Veterans Commission, the national anthem sung by Veterans Commission member Dave Sheldon, placement of a memorial wreath, welcome by Mayor Steve Griffitts, the reading of new pavers, Memorial Day address by Nicholas Newby’s mother, Theresa Hart, a bagpipe rendition of “Amazing Grace,” and a rifle salute. Ceremony will conclude with taps and the retiring of colors.
POST FALLS
• 10 a.m. | Evergreen Cemetery, 2795 N. Spokane St., Post Falls. Post Falls American Legion Post 143 will participate in ceremony, and Post Falls Veteran of the Year Harold Markiewicz will speak.
RATHDRUM
• Noon | Pinegrove Cemetery, 6693 W. Hwy 53. Hosted by city of Rathdrum and American Legion Post 154. Speakers include Len Crosby and John McClure.
PLUMMER
• 11:45 a.m. | Veterans Memorial at the trailhead of the Trail of the Coeur d’Alenes, just off U.S. 95 on Anne Antelope Road. Ceremony hosted by Coeur d’Alene Tribe.
