IDAHO FALLS — The much-anticipated rematch between Coeur d’Alene and defending champion Eagle at the state 5A softball tournament started Friday but didn’t finish.

The teams were scoreless through four innings when lightning and rain early Friday evening led to a delay, then the eventual suspension in play until today.

The teams are scheduled to resume at 8 a.m. PDT, in the top of the fifth, with Eagle up to bat.

Coeur d’Alene has one hit through four innings against Cal-bound pitcher Bradie Fillmore of Eagle (27-0).

“We look like we’re getting used to the speed and movement of the pitches,” Coeur d’Alene coach Darren Taylor said, “so hopefully in the morning we’ll be ready for them.”

Bre Burke also has thrown four scoreless innings for the Vikings, who opened the tourney at Bonneville High with a 5-1 victory over Highland of Pocatello.

Kylie Smith had three hits and Jane Wilkey added a pair of RBI singles for Coeur d’Alene (24-1), which scored twice in the first inning, then three more times in the seventh to break open a 2-1 game.

Kaylin Donovan doubled and scored on an error in the first inning, and Wilkey delivered an RBI single.

The Vikings opened the seventh with five straight hits. Donovan singled, Smith hit an RBI double, Burke followed with an RBI double, Wilkey drove in a run with a single and Miranda Amos singled.

“At least once every game, we try to get four straight baserunners,” Taylor said. “We feel if we get four in a row on base, it’s going to be a huge inning.”

After that game, there were two more lightning delays, pushing the schedule back before the Vikings took the field against Eagle, which beat Coeur d’Alene in last year’s state title game.

“Our young people were really jittery,” Taylor said of the opener. “We survived, really, is what we did. But we’re playing good defense against Eagle; we seemed to have settled down. Bre’s throwing well, and we’re playing solid ‘D.’”

The Coeur d’Alene-Eagle winner advances to the semifinals, while the loser faces Lake City in a consolation bracket game.

IDAHO FALLS — The Timberwolves fell 3-2 to Rocky Mountain of Meridian, then beat Skyline of Idaho Falls 11-2 on Friday at the state 5A softball tourney at Bonneville High.

In the opener, the Grizzlies (20-6) scored two runs with two outs in the top of the seventh inning to beat the Timberwolves (20-7). A two-out double was followed by a single and an error, scoring the tying run. Back-to-back passed balls allowed the go-ahead run to score.

Michaela Flerchinger struck out 10 for Lake City, and Reilly Williams and Kim Cook each drove in a run.

Against Skyline (17-12), Heather Hawkes had three hits and drove in four runs, and Haley Loffer had three hits and drove in three runs for Lake City.

Ashley Kaufman struck out seven in five innings in the second game.

Lake City awaits the loser of a winners bracket game between Eagle and Coeur d’Alene, suspended Friday night after four innings because of rain and lightning with no score.

CHUBBUCK — It wasn’t so much the rain and switching locations that caught the Timberlake Tigers off guard.

Actually, that was better for them anyway as their hotel was closer to Capell Park rather than Ward Park in Pocatello.

Timberlake fell to Kimberly 7-3, then lost to Intermountain League champion Bonners Ferry 10-0, finishing the season 12-8 in coach Casi Reisenauer’s first season as coach.

“It was just awesome that they got the games in today,” Reisenauer said. “They told us at the coaches meeting (on Thursday) that they didn’t think we were even going to play today.”

Glori Cheevers hit a two-run homer in the third inning against Kimberly to tie the game at 3-3, but a four-run fifth inning ended up costing the Tigers the game.

“We just made a lot of mistakes defensively,” Reisenauer said. “They took advantage of that and really hit the ball well.”

Against Bonners Ferry, Jorryn Bennett went 3 for 3 with four RBIs and Kassy Skeen went 3 for 3 as the Badgers eliminated the Tigers.

Emily Vanderhoof singled in the fourth inning for Timberlake to break up a no-hitter by Kadi Bateman of Bonners Ferry.

“I’m so proud of these girls,” Reisenauer said. “As bad of a day as we had, I couldn’t have asked for a better group of girls for my first season as coach. We learn from stuff like this. We’ll get better from here.”

St. Maries opened with a 9-5 loss to Bear Lake, beat Declo 12-2 in five innings before losing to New Plymouth.

Against Bear Lake, Devyn Wilson hit a two-run home run and Kayleen Peet hit a solo homer for St. Maries.

Kelsey Auer drove in three runs, and both Wilson and Paige Sines drove in two runs each as the Lumberjacks eliminated Declo.
