Kellogg girls win state title; Lakeside’s Arthur third in 2A girls

Post Falls High senior Joseph Glenn started Tuesday’s final round of the state 5A golf tournament on fire — birdie, birdie, par, birdie.

Then, just as quickly, it went south for a few holes.

But, as the gallery might tell you, at least he had a blast finishing up at BanBury Golf Course in Eagle.

Glenn, who tied for sixth, finished seventh in cardoff with a 76-72—148 for the Trojans, who finished fourth as a team.

“It was a very up and down day overall,” Glenn said. “I started off really hot, but then a couple of things went wrong. But all in all, I just tried to have the best time of my life. There was a couple of tough holes, and if you’re not completely there mentally, they’ll come back to bite you. There was some things that came up, and you learn as you play. Even though I’ve been playing for 15 years, it got me today. Overall, I was happy with the round.”

“Joseph had a phenomenal round,” Post Falls coach Maria Kostina said. “He was four-under after eight holes and shot another really close round.”

Glenn was then penalized for playing the wrong ball on the ninth hole, but bounced back to finish the round with a 1-over 72.

“He set a goal to play fearless golf today and did that at every pin,” Kostina said of Glenn. “Nothing really distracted him, and he still bounced back from an early setback. He was super fun to watch and the crowd that followed him was just amazed at the way he played. The college coaches were talking about him and the great golf he played.”

Carson Barry of Rocky Mountain was state medalist with a 139, helping the Grizzlies claim the team title with a 587. Eagle, which won last year’s tournament at Avondale Golf Club in Hayden Lake, was second at 617.

Glenn got back into the tournament, celebrating each big shot after another on the back nine.

“It’s something I’ve been doing the last couple of tournament,” said Glenn, who leaves in July on a two-year LDS Church mission, then hopes to resume his golf career in college. “It’s something that she (Maria) has been telling us to do. Tanner (Byers), Drew (Harris) and Chase (Bomar), she told us we need to celebrate the big shots, and that helps get rid of the bad shots.”

Post Falls finished fifth last year, missing a trophy by one place.

“As a team, we’d like to have played better,” Glenn said. “But you can’t complain about fourth.”

Post Falls’ girls finished eighth out of nine teams with a 374-397—771. Idaho Falls won the tournament with a 330-350—680.

“With the girls, the main thing was just getting here,” Kostina said. “We didn’t have any goals other than having an experience and learning from it for the future. It was really about getting to a big tournament, and they had a good time with it.”
