Updates near Northwest Boulevard

The key to most of this week’s news is the street Northwest Boulevard. However, this is actually a relatively “new” street that connects downtown to the freeway and all the newer places to the northwest.

In the early 1900s, this area south of the intersection of “newer streets” Ironwood and Seltice Way was the town of Gibbs — and the center of this was the Gibbs Mercantile, which was like a grocery store, shopping center and gas station all in one. Most men worked at the town lumber mill. The main street to the town of Gibbs was Mill Street coming from the hill to the northeast.

Changes within Gibbs Center

This “mercantile” building is now called Gibbs Center in the 1500 block of Northwest Boulevard. It’s been remodeled several times, and now it’s undergoing more changes.

One of the more recent businesses, Cameo Bridal, last year moved to Riverstone. This opened space for neighbor Hansen’s Florist & Gifts to double its space into the Cameo area.

The 10-year-old business is open 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays and 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturdays. Check www.hansensfloristandgifts.com. Phone 765-4171.

And this allows neighboring jewelry store Cheryl Burchell Goldsmiths to also double its space. This 27-year-old business was recently featured on the front page of the national publication “Mid-America Jewelry News.”

Owner Cheryl Burchell has been in the business for 40 years and specializes in being a full-service jewelry store with gold, silver, gems and repair. Her special hand-made pieces are in the theme of “Heart Like An Awl,” heart-shaped pieces from the meaning of the French name for the local Indians meaning “pointed-hearted,” referring to their cleverness in trading.

Hours are 9:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. weekdays and 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturdays. Check www.cherylburchellgoldsmiths.com. Phone 676-1645.

Terre Coffee opens this week

Across the street at 1527 Northwest Blvd., Terre Coffee & Bakery will open this week in what was the Porky G’s building. It has tables and barstools for 30 people around the many windows, outlets for charging and WIFI.

Owners Gabe and Mandy Booher specialize in pure and natural ingredients and “back to the roots of coffee,” which is what “terre” signifies. Baked goods are fresh daily with family recipes. They opened Post Falls Coffee Co. in 2010 and added their second location in 2012.

Coeur d’Alene hours are 5 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sundays. Phone 292-4807. Check www.terrecoffee.com.

Marketpad.com opens nearby

On the same street, Marketpad.com moved from Sunset Mall to Suite 100 of 1620 Northwest Blvd.

Marketpad.com is a deals-based website connecting small local businesses with buyers at no upfront marketing costs. They also partner with clubs, charities and organizations to help them fund-raise by selling local business deals on the organization’s online store.

Key players are Dave Spiker, Chris Reimche, Al Mark and Gary Schultze. Hours are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays. Phone 953-1590. Check www.marketpad.com.

Looking Glass Antiques opens

Offering antiques, vintage items, upcycled items, handmade wares and collectibles, Looking Glass Antiques opens Monday at 1207 N. Fourth St. (next to Ace Hardware). Owners Jeff and Heather Caton also have jewelry, furniture and home decor and offer vendor space (special rate in May).
