Sorensen kids to perform downtown

| May 13, 2016 9:00 PM

There will be dancing in the streets today in downtown Coeur d’Alene.

That’s when several hundred Sorensen Elementary Magnet School students will converge upon Sherman Avenue between Fifth and Sixth streets for a unique celebration of the arts. It coincides with May ArtWalk and the opening of a new art exhibit at The Art Spirit Gallery. The work of longtime Coeur d’Alene artists Allen and Mary Dee Dodge will be featured, along with numerous other exhibitions in galleries throughout the downtown area.

Sorensen students will showcase their talents for the public: theater, visual art, marimbas, singing, juggling, dance, band, strings, and even chess and Legos.

Sherman Avenue will be closed from 4:30-7:30 p.m. to create an even more festive atmosphere.

Next year, Sorensen Elementary will celebrate its 10th anniversary as a public magnet school for the arts and humanities. Faced in 2006 with declining enrollment, low test scores and costly building upgrades, the magnet school for the arts was developed.
