SANDPOINT — At the end of the day, one team was able to cash in on a couple of key bases-loaded situations, and the other was not, ultimately proving the difference as the No. 1 seed Sandpoint Bulldogs earned a hard-fought 8-6 win over the No. 2 Lakeland Hawks in the 4A Region 1 softball championship game Thursday at windy Sandpoint Middle School.

Kenzie Crabb and Cheri-lyn Darrah each laced bases-clearing doubles, leading the Bulldogs (13-7) back to state for the first time since 2003, while Bri Baldree struck out seven and pitched out of a couple of bases loaded jams. It marked the fifth straight win over the Hawks (7-16) this season for the Bulldogs, many in tight fashion.

Sandpoint advances to the state tournament next Friday and Saturday in Twin Falls. Lakeland plays Bishop Kelly on Saturday in a state play-in game at Orofino.

The Hawks jumped out to 3-0 and 6-3 leads, before Sandpoint rallied with five runs in the fifth inning. In the top of the seventh, Lakeland had runners on second and third with two outs and one of its best hitters up in Katie Kastning, but could not tie the game.

“It was great competition. Good for (Sandpoint), it’s been a long time,” Lakeland coach Colleen Bevacqua said.

Darrah’s three-run double in the fourth tied the game at 6.

COEUR d’ALENE — Miranda Amos’ grand slam in the third inning broke open a close game, and lifted the host Vikings past the Trojans in the loser-out second-place game of the 5A Region 1 tournament at Larry Schwenke Field.

The homer by Amos, to dead center field, followed singles by Kylie Smith, Breana Burke and Jane Wilkey, and extended Coeur d’Alene’s lead to 6-0.

“We were still reeling a little bit from the loss (to Lake City in Tuesday’s regional title game, the Vikings’ first loss of the season),” Coeur d’Alene coach Darren Taylor said. “I think that (Amos’ blast) kind of settled everybody down.”

Burke struck out five and walked none for Coeur d’Alene (22-1), which plays Meridian (21-7) on Saturday at 11 a.m. at Airport Park in Lewiston in a state play-in game. Burke also went 3 for 3, with RBI singles in the first and fourth innings.

Post Falls finished 14-11, the Trojans’ best season since 2010.

LEWISTON — Alex Light hit a bases-clearing double in a five-run third inning as the Bengals beat the Trojans in the 5A Region 1 second-place game at Church Field.

Post Falls (13-14) took a 2-0 lead in the first as Cam McKeown scored on an RBI single by Wyatt Setian, who scored on a sacrifice fly by Jake Pfennigs.

“The outcome wasn’t a result of the effort,” Post Falls coach Dustin Frank said. “Bottom line, we came up short and simply got outplayed today. We didn’t execute in some at-bats where we needed to perform. I’m very proud of the guys throughout the season. We played hard and didn’t have any regrets.”

Lewiston (21-5) advances to a state play-in game on Saturday.
