PREP ROUNDUP: Sines sends St. Maries to state tourney

OROFINO — Down two strikes in the count, St. Maries coach Todd Bitterman told Paige Sines to just get a lift on the ball.

Well, she did that, and a little more.

Sines hit a go-ahead two-run home run in the top of the ninth inning to send the Lumberjacks past the Orofino Maniacs 4-2 in the 2A District 1-2 championship game to advance to the state tournament starting next Friday at Blackfoot High.

“She lifted it,” Bitterman said. “Right out of the park.”

Kyrra Powell allowed two runs in nine innings for St. Maries.

St. Maries (12-7) opens the state tournament next Friday against the winner of a play-in game.

“We’re getting the confidence that we can do this thing,” Bitterman said. “Kyrra just battled and we played fantastic defense.”

Earlier, St. Maries rolled past Kendrick 12-0 in five innings to advance to the title game.

Orofino will face Kendrick in the second place game tonight at Orofino High.

SANDPOINT — Cameron Chun had seven goals and two assists for Lake City in a Idaho Lacrosse League win against Sandpoint at Great Northern Park.

Matt Duchow scored four goals and Olan Scholin stopped four shots for Lake City (8-3), which hosts Moscow on Saturday at 1 p.m.
