SPOKANE — The North Idaho Cardinal softball team beat the Community Colleges of Spokane 6-4 and 15-6 on Wednesday, clinching the East Region championship in a Northwest Athletic Conference doubleheader at Spokane Falls Community College.

NIC (33-9, 26-4 NWAC) — which has won 15 straight — needed a three-run top of the sixth inning to rally in the first game, which clinched the championship in the program’s first year of eligibility for the postseason in the league.

“It’s exciting to come in and win in our first year and represent the school,” NIC assistant coach Shay Fuson said. “We’ve been fighting all year to accomplish this and this was one of our goals. We’re looking forward to going to the NWAC touranment and trying to win that as well.”

NIC coach Don Don Williams was injured in the first game after being hit in the elbow with a foul ball.

Further information was not available at press time.

NIC plays at Walla Walla on Friday to conclude the regular season.
