POST FALLS — Chances are, if you can catch up with Coeur d’Alene High senior Emily Callahan — whether that’s on the track or the golf course — you’re doing something special.

Callahan, a senior who also competes on the Vikings’ golf team, recently verbally committed to the University of Idaho track program.

“I really like the campus and my teammates,” Callahan said. “Some of my former teammates are down there and run, and they said they love it. The coaches are super nice, and I really like the campus as well.

Kara Story, Krista Story, Victoria Goetz are in their freshman year competing at Idaho.

Callahan is also preparing for the 5A Region 1 golf tournament on Monday at The Links in Post Falls.

“I’ve always loved golf and running,” Callahan said. “I’ve also loved running cross country as well, and I just liked to do both. I also wanted to be the first person to letter in 16 varsity sports from my freshman to senior year.”

Callahan is a four-year member of the Viking basketball, track and field, golf and cross country team. She missed her entire junior season in cross country due to injury.

“It’s pretty crazy,” Callahan said of earning 16 varsity letters. “It’s pretty cool to accomplish something like that.”

Idaho was the only school that showed genuine interest in Callahan to run at the next level.

“I really didn’t talk to that many schools,” Callahan said.

During Thursday’s District 1 All-Star meet, the Coeur d’Alene girls won the 4x200 relay in 1:44.42, with Callahan in the anchor leg.

“I love my teammates,” said Callahan, who also runs the event with Carmen Duffy, Taryn Horvath and Josette McArthur. “Our goal is to beat the record of last year’s team and get the school record.”

Callahan also won the 800 — breaking the meet record of Steffie Pavey of Priest River in a time of 2:19.74 — and 4x400 relay for Coeur d’Alene. Pavey’s record was 2:20.27, set in 2013.

Entering Thursday, the record was 1:44.15 set by this year’s group at the Strandberg Invitational at Central Valley High in Spokane. They’ve already improved on last year’s finish by .78 seconds. The team finished second at state last year.

“All of us just need to keep running our hardest,” Callahan said of a possible state title. “If we can continue to do that, we should be able to get it.”

At Idaho, Callahan intends to just focus on track — for now.

“I think I’ll get a lot better just focusing on one (sport) next year,” Callahan said. “I’ll finally just be able to focus on one (sport). I might think about cross country again after my freshman year, just to see how hard I’ve got to work.”

The shift to Division I is something that first-year Coeur d’Alene coach Justin Aguilar believes that Callahan will handle without issue.

“She’s been phenomenal to coach this year,” Aguilar said. “She’s been easy to coach and an outstanding athlete in everything she does. Anything I’ve asked her to do, she’s done and willing to do it. She’ll fit in great at Idaho. I can’t say enough good things about her. She’s got some unbelievable natural talent and continues to work hard. And she’ll put it all together with the right coaching down there. They’re great coaches and they’ll bring the best out of her next year.”

As for other meet records, Coeur d’Alene junior Zac Magee won the 400-meter dash in a record 49.22 seconds, clipping the record set by Timberlake’s Nick Puckett (49.29) in 2008.

Coeur d’Alene junior Caitlin Conway set a meet record in the 1,600, finishing in 5:16.75, breaking the record of former Coeur d’Alene High standout Kinsey Gomez (5:17.03) set in 2011.

Lakeland sophomore Whitnee Skalskiy won the triple jump with a record 36-5 1/2, breaking the previous mark set by Coeur d’Alene Charter’s Sabrina Ewing (36-2) in 2009.
