COEUR d’ALENE — And with a split for the second straight Tuesday, there’s still some work to be done as far as who’s playing where in the 5A Region 1 tournament.

In the opener, Lake City senior left-hander Dominic Congiliaro struck out five and allowed three hits as the visiting Timberwolves beat the Vikings 11-4 at Ted Page Field in 5A Inland Empire League play.

Jonny Plum hit a solo home run in the third to break a 2-2 tie for Coeur d’Alene in a 6-5 win in the second game to earn the split.

Coeur d’Alene (15-6, 7-3 5A IEL) visits Lewiston on Friday to conclude the regular season. Lake City (14-8, 7-5), which could have wrapped up the top seed to regionals with a sweep, is off until the opening round of regionals on Monday.

It was the second straight week that Conigliaro had pitched Lake City to a win over its city rival.

“I definitely get pumped up to play them,” said Conigilario, who struck out 10 in a 10-0 shutout in the first game of a doubleheader on April 25 at Lake City High. “I go out with a little more intensity. I was just trying to throw strikes and let them put the ball in play. It’s something I’ve always done and I’m not a pitcher that’s going to throw the ball by you by any means. I was just trying to let my defense work for me.”

“He does a good job against us,” first-year Coeur d’Alene coach Nick Mahin said. “He does a really good job of pounding the zone and taking us out of our plan. We came out in the first game and were a little flat, but we regrouped and had our senior day celebration. It could have been a momentum killer, but the guys bounced back and played well in the second game.”

“Dom competed from the first pitch to the last pitch,” first-year Lake City coach Paul Manzardo said. “I’m extremely proud of Dominic. He’s a 100 percent competitor and our team is extremely fortunate to have him. The school’s going to lose a good one when he graduates.”

Kodie Kolden and Kyle Manzardo hit back-to-back home runs in the fourth inning for Lake City.

“Once they did that, it was kind of like a snowball effect and we were able to get the bats going,” coach Manzardo said. “We didn’t look back. Coeur d’Alene is a good team and they don’t give up. They just fought back and they’ve got that no-give-up mentality.”

In the second game, Plum hit a two-out, two-strike pitch to give Coeur d’Alene the lead for good. The Vikings tacked on runs in the fourth and fifth inning to take a 6-2 lead.

“It was a 2-2 game and they did a good job of getting back into the game,” Mahin said. “Jonny did a good job of getting a good pitch to hit and knocking it out of the park. And we carried the momentum from there.”

“Any four of these teams could win the district championship,” Manzardo said. “Right now, we’ll go back to the drawing board and get healthy and ready to go and see what happens.”

Both Lake City and Post Falls have completed league play.

“The thing about this league is that it’s a sprint,” said Mahin, who played several seasons in the minor leagues. “It’s tough for a guy like me that’s used to playing long seasons to get used to, because it’s really a sprint. We’ve got to take care of business at Lewiston on Friday to lock up the No. 1 seed. Right now, as a team, we’re focusing on taking it pitch by pitch and not worrying about wins and losses and just trying to get better with each pitch. With (Coeur d’Alene centerfielder) Nate (English), the way he carried himself (in the second game) and played in center really carried the momentum and he took away three hits. If those fall, who knows what happens.”

SPIRIT LAKE — Jerrett Plunkett tripled twice and scored two runs for the Tigers in an Intermountain League loss to the Badgers.

“Bonners Ferry hit the ball extremely well to start the game off until we got ourselves settled in,” Timberlake coach Matt George said. “Unfortunately, the five runs we gave up in the first was just too much to overcome. Without the rough start, we win that game.”

Timberlake had senior Gage Wells coaching third base and senior student manager Riley McNamara calling pitches.

“We honored our 10 senior players and manager,” George said. “It was an enjoyable game with the senior boys deciding the lineup. We gave seven of our pitchers an inning each, allowing the seniors to pitch and play in the field.”

Bonners Ferry, which has clinched the league title and right to host the 3A District 1 tournament next week, improves to 19-2, 9-0 IML.

Timberlake, the tournament’s second seed, is 9-12, 5-4 and is off until the district tournament.
