Ceremony set to honor Sgt. Moore

| May 4, 2016 9:00 PM

COEUR d'ALENE — The community will have multiple opportunities Thursday to honor the memory of Coeur d'Alene Police Sgt. Greg Moore.

Moore, a 16-year veteran of the Coeur d'Alene Police force, was killed in the line of duty on May 5, 2015. Although Law Enforcement Memorial Week begins on May 15, the Coeur d'Alene Police Department will be honoring Moore by holding its ceremony on Thursday at the Fallen Heroes Plaza, which is at Cherry Hill Park, 1718 N 15th Street, Coeur d'Alene.

The ceremony, which is open to the public, begins at 3 p.m. and will last approximately 20 minutes.

In addition to the official ceremony, a balloon release has been planned for Thursday evening at Independence Point in Coeur d'Alene. Brenda Knight, a Coeur d'Alene resident and Post Falls Police officer, told The Press she knew Moore for years, and was struck by how the community rallied around law enforcement and Moore's family following the tragic events.

"I don't think we've ever seen such an outpouring of support for law enforcement from the community," Knight said.

Around 5:50 p.m., Knight and other event volunteers will hand out biodegradable balloons to participants. There will be a brief ceremony and tribute to Moore before attendees release the balloons.

"It will be a powerful image to have all these balloons flying over the community Greg served," Knight said.

About 400 people, including Moore's family, are expected to attend the event.

"It's not a sad event," Knight added. "It's a celebration of the life that Greg had."
