On this Memorial Day we honor our war dead. Countless are those who heroically gave their lives so that we can live ours, knowing our freedom is because of them. Our Gold Star families cherish the memory of their loved ones lost in war. Our Blue Star families pray every day that their loved ones will come home safely. The families who live in freedom here at home while their loved ones are doing battle in foreign lands, know the sacrifice, not only of their troopers, but their own anguish. Currently it is said that one percent serve to protect the 99 percent here at home. These brave men and women on the front lines of freedom need and deserve our devotion. To the families who have loved ones who gave it all, we honor them on this 150th anniversary of Memorial Day.

Since its birth, America has steadfastly set aside a day to commemorate those who died in battle. Memorial Day was a response to the unprecedented carnage of the Civil War, and a loss of 620,000 soldiers on both sides. According to USA Today, that’s just 20,000 fewer than the total number of Americans who died in all other conflicts combined.

Spinal disc problems
Approximately 20 percent of the population has back pain. For many decades, doctors believed that most back pain was caused by “slipped” or “torn” discs. We now know this is not true. Disc problems constitute only a small portion of the causes of back pain and rarely require surgery for pain relief.

Clifford, Hawkinson,
The annual rosé article
Memorial Day is this coming weekend, which makes it time to fire up the grill and start sampling the annual crop of newly released dry rosé. There is no better summer wine! Thankfully, the days of the cloying and sweet white Zinfandels and other sweet pink wines are far in the rear view mirror. Reinforcing what today’s rosés are like helps wine consumers understand how tasty these wines are during summer.

GRIZZLIES: Don't delist them
I and many others here in North Idaho oppose the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service proposal to remove grizzly bears (Ursus arctos) in the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem (GYE) as threatened from the U.S. Endangered Species Act (ESA). The proposal is premature as the GYE grizzly bear population remains in peril from the combined effects of habitat loss and fragmentation, climate change, decline of primary food sources and human caused mortality. Delisting and subsequently adding the threat of mortality from trophy hunting and poaching will seriously jeopardize grizzly bears.

NATION: Guide to greatness
Lemme see if I can’t clear up a few issues that seem to have been perplexing our nation for some time now.
Farm-to-table in your own backyard
Fresh salsa
Farm-to-table is a trend that is becoming increasingly popular among U.S. restaurants. What is farm-to-table? It can hold a different meaning depending on how one looks at it. A blanket meaning is the production process from harvest to consumption, and everything in between such as packaging and sales. However, some argue that true farm-to-table is prepared food that comes directly from a farm, or garden, without going through the distribution process. The Garnet Café on Walnut in Coeur d’Alene is one such restaurant which a lot of the food comes from the owners’ farm, McLane Farms, just minutes away.

As we head into the first three-day weekend of the upcoming summer season, it’s good to remember why Memorial Day is observed. In 1868, it was known as Decoration Day, a day to decorate the graves of Civil War soldiers. Now it commemorates American war dead through the generations.

I would like to thank the Republican voters of District 4 for the opportunity to represent our community in the Idaho State Legislature. This primary race was an incredibly close election and I realize that there are many individuals in this community who supported Rep. Kathy Sims in her reelection bid. Political elections are a critical piece of our American way of life, and being so, they often engender a great deal of passion from the supporters of candidates. Although Rep. SLAVES: An urban reality
There is a growing movement, spearheaded by the politically correct agenda, suggesting that descendants of slaves should receive restitution for the actions of some of our white ancestors. Is this issue going to be added to the Democratic platform to obtain the rest of the black vote? Black Americans have been played like a fiddle. In effect, they are being held as slaves by the Democratic Party. Over the last few decades, billions of federal dollars have been poured into large cities to keep the communities afloat. The golden goose, however, is losing its ability to lay eggs. Detroit, Chicago, Cleveland and other liberal Democratic strongholds are going broke and the rest of us are expected to bail them out. Jimmy Carter is not considered to be one of our better presidents; however, he knew that pouring more money into large city coffers would compound city problems and draw more black and indigent white people to the blighted areas.

BEAR: No joy in slaying
I find your piece on little Cooper Surplus and his parents celebrating around a dead bear extremely disturbing. They were dressed in their silly camouflaged clothing as if they had accomplished something joyous. Your newspaper sugar coated the piece describing the slaughter as a harvest. I view it, as many of your other readers, as a senseless, cruel act. To kill a defenseless bear that died in pain and fear is nothing more than psychotic behavior carried out by a dysfunctional family who are nothing more than social misfits. They take pleasure in posing with the dead animal with much glee. It’s disgusting and the Coeur d’Alene Press should not enable and encourage these heartless cowards and dress up their deed as some kind of “Feel Good” article.

Vines and vintages, weather and rain
We have written many times about the preferences of winemakers and growers alike, which simply put are that a long slow dry and warm growing season is always better than any year involving cold and wet. We talk to our winery and farming friends regularly, and this opinion is about as close to universal as you can get. We thank all our contacts in ‘the business” for their regular updates and opinions. We need only look back over the last 20 vintages in the western US to get a clear sense of why this preference is so uniform.

My favorite magazine — The Economist — is a knowledgeable and durable publication, closing in on its 200th anniversary. Not long ago it had an insightful article about charities. As we all know, many are frauds and steal billions of dollars from unsuspecting donors every year. Many more are legitimate and deserve the support they receive from donors. When asked to pick the one type of charity that gets the most bang for the bucks they receive, food banks come out on top. This is not to demean other types of charities, as the legitimate ones all provide fantastic aid and assistance to their clientele. But food banks, because of their simple business plan and stripped down overhead, really shine.

BATHROOMS: No sanity relief
Sanity has taken a holiday. First I want to point out that bathrooms for men vs. women is meeting its death due to an estimated .07 percent of the population, forget the other 99.03 percent. This is where America is today. Bathrooms will be forced into being single person use (a la Kroc swim changing area) because, well, businesses will be forced to do it. This will be a big expense for Mom & Pop and while they might be able to afford the renovation, what used to be a men’s room with one or two urinals and a stall will become one unisex bathroom and the women’s went from two or three to one unisex. All to appease .07 percent because of their “feelings.”

Bob has the experience and knowledge to do the job, he will be ready to go on Day One. In visiting with the two newest members of the BOCC after they first took office, they both described the initial learning process and assimilation of information as “drinking from a fire hose.” Bob has attended many, many of the county meetings and researched the issues involved with being a commissioner. Not only is he prepared to go to work, he is an honest, God-fearing man who has defended property owners and tax payer rights for the last four years. Bob would like to see a more honest and transparent process at all levels in county government. He has not been and will not be a paid puppet for someone else’s agenda. One of the many outdoor features we enjoy in the Panhandle is the abundance of lowland lakes that are available for public fishing. There are around 68 small, low-elevation lakes with public access for anglers in the Panhandle Region.
GREEN: Cannot support candidate
I supported John Green for sheriff in 2012; I even made a large campaign donation.
RIGGS: Represents hope for future
Peter Riggs is conservative. But he is far more than that. He is principled, articulate, logical, and a good thinker. He is pro-business, pro-education and pro-family. He is also pro-economy. He knows that without a good balance of all of these, the very foundation of our American society will crumble.

DUNCAN: True public servant
I have known Leslie Duncan more than 15 years and during this time, have seen her grow in wisdom and character. When receiving any responsibility or fulfilling any role, Leslie will be resourceful and considerate in her part. She has always been goal-oriented and determined.
RASMUSSEN: The best candidate
My goal is to hire Duane Rasmussen as the new Kootenai County Commissioner to replace outgoing Commissioner Dan Green. Although Kootenai County voters will cast their ballot for the Republican Primary on May 17, in reality it’s a hiring process. I desire to hire the most experienced and educated individual for County Commissioner.
CHEATHAM, MACOMBER, SIMS: Solid conservatives
If you are conservative in the sense that you want less government, less regulation and less taxes, then vote for Don Cheatham for seat 3-B, Art Macomber for seat 4-A and Kathy Sims for seat 4-B. These candidates are solid conservatives.

MALEK: Quality representative
Progress, they say, requires tough decisions and paying attention to the needs of the community at large. Politicians with agendas or heavily beholden to special interest such as Idaho Freedom Foundation are potentially disastrous in a fast growing community like ours.

RASMUSSEN: Keen on common sense
Duane Rasmussen has one quality that is often missing from county commissioners in Kootenai County. He has an inspiring level of common sense about public policy. I’ve known Duane for many years and have discussed numerous topics with him during that time. He always applies common sense in his approach to solving problems.

Enjoy outdoors fun at Spring Fest this weekend
The Kootenai County Fairgrounds' signature spring event has been rebranded for its fourth year to include several new attractions.
STEWART: Dedicated servant
My wife and I have known David Stewart for about 15 years. He is the most dedicated, hardworking commissioner we have known. We wondered why he would want to get into politics but we now understand that it is because he felt he could do positive things for the people of Kootenai County, and he HAS.
AMADOR: He understands Idaho
Having lived in North Idaho for decades and as an employee of Post Falls Parks and Recreation, I am able to see the joy of our citizens as they participate in outdoor activities. At the same time, I recognize the economic impact of tourism and recreation in our area and value the outdoor experiences we are able to provide to those living in North Idaho and those who visit. As we move forward and vote this spring, let’s keep the assets of Idaho in mind. Let’s elect a representative who understands the value of recreation and the connection to economic vitality in our region.

MALEK: Community advocate
Please join me in voting for Luke Malek for State Representative Seat 4A in the May 17 Republican primary election. I’ve worked with Luke on economic development efforts in North Idaho and he has always been a passionate advocate for our community. His key role in securing the new University of Idaho Computer Science program located in Coeur d’Alene is a great example of Luke’s support of our education system which is an integral part of economic development. As a small business owner and father of two boys I really appreciate Luke’s ability to think critically about complex issues and help find real Idaho solutions. If you agree that we need to retain experienced and visionary legislative leadership in Boise, please join me in voting for Luke Malek on May 17.
ADHD and sleep-disordered breathing
One of the most commonly diagnosed disorders in children is attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), which is a condition that varies widely in kids. Over 6 million children in the US have been diagnosed with ADHD. There are three types of ADHD: inattentive, hyperactive-impulsive, and combined. The condition can also vary from mild to severe and can affect adults as well.
RULES: Apply to us all
Why is it we increasingly see a set of rules for “them” and another set of rules and laws for the rest of “us?” This is happening more and more on a national level (Obama often ignoring the U.S. Constitution; Hillary ignoring laws), on down to our own local level here in Kootenai County (David Stewart’s obvious evasion of taxes on and no permit for his home).

LIBRARY: Worth your support
May 17 is a very important day for the eight libraries in our Community Library Network. Each library is counting on its patrons to vote to pass a levy to refurbish these wonderful community assets. The cost is very small for the value received. We spend on lattes, movie tickets, smart phones, electronic devices, and we should not forget the library. We get so much use from the library for just a few dollars a year.
You should know
The time is now for you to have your annual physical therapy evaluation for any of your musculoskeletal problems. I know, maybe you think your back or shoulder pain is just something you have to live with, or maybe you think that nagging sciatica or old whiplash injury is just something you must endure. But why? You can come in for a baseline evaluation of your musculoskeletal system and get help for what ails you. Physical therapists are movement specialists. They train in what is normal movement patterns so they can know what is abnormal and then they can get you back on track.

He grew up in New Plymouth and graduated from Fruitland High School in 1955.
BINGHAM: Man of action
Bob Bingham is a servant leader who cares about our community. For the last several years, he has invested his time and energy for the betterment of our county. Bob is a man of action. While most of us just complain about issues, Bob actually DOES SOMETHING. When a storm hits and trees block the road, Bob rolls up his sleeves and clears the road for his neighbors. When electricity is out, Bob loads up his truck with supplies and helps those in need.
Truly cultured
Recently, a new trend in eating is gaining popularity — that of consuming cultured foods. Also known as fermented, lacto-fermented, soured and pickled, these foods have many benefits. We consume cultured foods on a regular basis: yogurt, cheese, sour cream, cottage cheese, buttermilk, vinegar, beer, wine, sourdough bread, and sauerkraut are all cultured foods. Fish sauce, soy sauce, pickles and most condiments were historically cultured, but are more commercially prepared and are no longer the same. Some have existed for literally thousands of years.

I strongly urge Idaho voters to avoid voting for Sergio A. Gutierrez for Idaho Supreme Court justice in the forthcoming election. AMADOR: Clearly the best
As the recently retired Director of Technology for the Coeur d’Alene School District, I feel compelled to encourage you to support Paul Amador as he challenges Kathy Sims for Idaho House Seat 4B in the upcoming primary. Anyone who knows Paul, can vouch for his high degree of character. Paul understands the importance of volunteerism and is active with several community groups. With his strong ties to education in his role as the Director of Program Planning and Development for the University of Idaho, it goes without saying that Paul is a much needed voice for education in the House.
Enjoying the rituals of spring

I wanted to tell each and every one of these young people that yes, these are memorable magical times of their lives but by no means are these the best years of their lives. The world awaits.

Idaho Freedom Index fails as standard for conservatism
The Idaho Freedom Foundation (IFF) would have us believe that their “Freedom Index” is the benchmark by which conservative legislators should be judged. In reality, it is of marginal use in identifying fealty to conservative values, and is being used as a bully tactic against select legislators whom the foundation has targeted as dispensable.
Wine at its simplest
Virtually everything we enjoy today started off in a simpler form before evolving to what we know now. Wine has been around since biblical times, perhaps even longer. It started out as a very basic reaction: yeast consumed the sugar in grapes during fermentation, and created a grape-based alcohol (not the only one by any stretch) called wine, vino, vin or any other myriad names, depending on the area of origin.

DOG OWNERS: Use heads, hearts
Unleashed dogs and their inconsiderate owners on Tubbs Hill, McEuen Park and around downtown Coeur d’Alene are challenging for my blind husband and his guide dog, Nerice. Imagine walking these areas with impaired vision having to rely on a guide dog to step safely, hearing barking, growling and sensing one or more unleashed dogs running toward you. Imagine the fear you would have not knowing whether or not these dogs would be attacking you or your highly trained, valuable guide dog. Imagine the frustration you would experience when the inconsiderate owner yells at you to leave the area that you have a right to be. Think of the loss of nearly two years of training and $65,000 if your guide dog is attacked by one of these unleashed dogs and could no longer work.

OBAMA: Talk about offensive
Let me get this straight: The president was offended by Queen Elizabeth’s great-grandson wearing pajamas and a robe when meeting the president, but was NOT offended by the comedian Larry Wilmore’s use of a racial slur, who concluded his remarks noting progress on race and that a black man was president by saying, “Yo Barry, you did it my n…, you did it.” The president commenting that he appreciated the spirit of racial progress the comedian was trying to convey. Spirit of racial progress, by using the N-word?

Facts about Vietnam War remain distorted
In reading Chris Green’s article, “Effects of Vietnam War still felt today” in the April 8, ‘My Turn’ section, rekindled many personal memories of that time. Some good, some not so good. Retiring from the U.S. Army after 20 years in 1983, I served four combat tours in Vietnam, starting out as an infantry private in the bloody Ia Drang Valley battles of 1965. In three subsequent tours I served in various leadership positions in the infantry as well as in Special Forces operations. In the course of those tours I was wounded three times. So I guess one could say I was there from the beginning of U.S. troop involvement in Vietnam.

BINGHAM: A false conservative
Two years ago we elected a commissioner who ran unopposed and was not vetted. This year a candidate for commissioner in District 3 is misrepresenting himself. When a publication questioned Bob Bingham’s qualifications for office, one of his supporters panicked, writing that journalists should not vet his candidate, but that the public should do so unsupported. So, let’s do so.

JUDGE: Go for Gutierrez
I hope all Idahoans will remember to vote in the one contested race that will be on all primary ballots May 17: the election for Idaho Supreme Court justice. Judge Sergio Gutierrez has far and away the most relevant experience of all the candidates. As the only judge in the field, “Judge G” was appointed to the bench by governors of each political party (to the District Court by Gov. Andrus, to the Court of Appeals by Gov. Kempthorne). He is a well-respected jurist who is known for following the law in his decisions, rather than any ideology. For these reasons, he was rated the highest candidate by Idaho judges and lawyers for judicial temperament and demeanor, as well as for integrity and independence.

AMADOR: For a better future
As a parent of two children in the Coeur d’Alene School District and an educator in the district tasked with supporting teachers, I recognize the role of education in supporting a bright and positive future for Coeur d’Alene. I want the best for my children, their friends, and for our community. This legislative session, I urge constituents to look past rhetoric from candidates who claim they are education supporters and seek true advocates of education on the ballot. Kathy Sims claims that she supports education, but has voted “NO” on numerous education bills, including the teacher career ladder (HB 571) and children’s reading programs (HB 647). We need an advocate for our children in the legislature. We need Paul Amador to represent all people of Coeur d’Alene — he is a strong supporter of a diverse educational system, has worked with and listened to educators, and is truly focused on improving the lives of citizens in Kootenai County. Paul is also fiscally responsible and will ensure that all funds are allocated appropriately to do the most good for our community. On May 17, vote for Paul Amador for House Seat 4B to support our kids and our future in Coeur d’Alene.

Costly fire season left some serious marks
Last year, during the 2015 Legislature, all indicators pointed toward an intense fire season for the summer. Routine fires to remove noxious weeds or slash piles were getting out of hand. Area snow-pack stood at 22 percent of normal in April, and warm temperatures arrived early, prompting a warning from the U.S. Forest Service that the 2015 fire season was going to be extraordinary. That much seemed obvious.

I was shocked at the aggressive comments that Art Macomber made against Rep. Malek during the debate. It became very obvious that Mr. Macomber’s only attempt to outshine Rep. ANIMALS: Stop inhumane testing
Each year approximately 80,000 dogs, 20,000 cats, and 300,000 bunnies and hundreds of thousands of other animals are used to test cosmetics, household products, cleaners, and more for non-medical reasons. The dogs are tattooed, debarked, kept in cages and subjected to painful procedures and experiments — repeatedly. Their lives are devoid of sunlight, fresh air, fun and freedom. Seventy thousand of the dogs used are beagles because of their friendly, docile, trusting and forgiving personalities.
COMMISSION: The missing candidate
I attended the candidates’ forum put on by the Kootenai Shoshone Farm Bureau, Coeur d’Alene Lakeshore Property Owners Association and North West Property Owners Alliance at Candlelight Christian Fellowship the other evening. I found it interesting that Fred Meckel recited his list of his accomplishments but failed to tell everyone that he’s a precinct committeeman on the Kootenai County Republican Central Committee. Then I figured out why. “Missing Meckel” failed to show up for nearly 90 percent of the meetings. (http://www.kootenaigop.org/news/kcrcc-attendance-records-current-through-april-2016) A psychologist would label that “apathy!” This is a position he was elected to and he’s supposed to be representing Republicans in his precinct.
BINGHAM: Defender of rights
It is easy for me to vote for Bob Bingham because I know he will make an excellent commissioner. How do I know, because he has been engaged in county government as an active citizen for nearly four years. Bob was one of the leaders in the fight to defend our property rights against the Unified Land Use Code (ULUC), he succeeded in getting impact fees rescinded and refunded and has brought a measure of transparency to the budgeting process. Basically, he’s already doing the job.
AMADOR: Time for change
As a longtime Coeur d’Alene resident, local businessman and family man, I care deeply about education and the long term economic and social vitality of our community. I have had serious concerns in recent years about the direction and voting record of many of our state legislators. Many of our legislators have made a habit out of voting against many important pieces of legislation that had the potential to benefit Coeur d’Alene. Examples include voting against the mental health crisis center, which has helped to divert individuals in crisis away from our local emergency rooms and jails and provides an important resource to our community and voting against enforcing our child support system, which would have made Idaho a safe-haven for so called “dead-beat” parents. Fortunately we have an honest alternative this election cycle, Paul Amador is an excellent candidate for House Seat! 4B. Amador is very well educated and a true Coeur d’Alene conservative, who will represent us well in Boise. Paul is focused on earning the endorsement of our community rather than the Washington, D.C., establishment. If you care about our community and are tired of political insiders constantly seeking reelection, please make sure to vote for Paul Amador on May 17th. Visit http://www.amadorforidaho.com/ for more information and background on Paul.
FILLIOS: The right choice
It is time to focus on the upcoming Primary for Kootenai County commissioners. History shows that the winning candidate will be selected in the Republican Primary on May 17.
SIMS: Dedicated servant
Kathy Sims is the right person to represent us as our State Representative in Boise. She has always made herself available to listen to the concerns of the citizens in her district. She has worked diligently to bring those concerns to the forefront for further discussions.
CHEATHAM: Major accomplishments
North Idaho is fortunate to have Rep. Don Cheatham representing us in the Legislature in Boise. There is no logical reason to replace this dedicated conservative leader. He certainly should not be replaced by the untested blank slate candidate, Mr. Riggs.

AMADOR: Has priorities straight
I am writing to express my support for Paul Amador for Idaho House Representative District 4B who is challenging Representative Kathy Sims in the upcoming Republican primary on May 17. As a mother of two small children who are entering elementary school the future of education in our state is a priority to me and my family. Paul Amador is a strong advocate for investing in public education and I believe he will bring new and innovative ideas to the education discussion. I also respect that he believes that a strong education system will aid in boosting the economy in the state of Idaho by preparing smart and well trained citizens. If you value a quality public education in the state of Idaho, please join me in voting for Paul Amador on May 17.

Chief White: We're all in this together
On May 5, 2015, Sgt. Greg Moore was killed in the line of duty. Next week, his name will be added to the more than 20,000 names on the wall at the National Law Enforcement Memorial in Washington, D.C. Each of the fallen officers, and those who continue to serve in uniform, represent the honor and traditions that are the backbone of the American public safety professional. Those principles are sustained today by the ethics, professionalism, bravery, and sacrifice of our officers.
Coming together for Sgt. Moore

Election: 'Resolutely religious' is wrong
Most of us are brought up to not discuss religion or politics, and mostly for good reason. These topics are historically considered impolite — except around those whom we feel most comfortable. Few people enjoy confrontation and both subjects tend to make for passionate exchanges. But I emphatically hold protected free speech and intelligent exchange more important than their absence. So at the risk of double-offending: I submit the Republican Political Party, currently courting the resolutely religious, has negatively affected our 2016 presidential race by failing to provide us a quality candidate.

What's in your supplement?
Have you ever taken a fish oil supplement because you heard it was good for your heart? How about a vitamin C gummy when you feel a cold coming on? According to the CDC, over half of American consumers use supplements regularly, but there are a few things to be aware of with supplements.

Feedback should be a thing of the past
Almost everyone knows someone who wears a hearing aid which tends to whistle. What causes this annoying and embarrassing sound? Feedback is a whistling sound, which occurs when sound from the aid escapes back out of the ear and makes the aid amplify it over again.

Kids eating food
“If I have to eat the whole thing I’ll barf,” I bark at my mother. “Just three bites and you can be excused,” mom prods. I shake my head in disgust, sitting at the dining room table with my sister and brother staring at two fried oysters on my plate. “At Girl Scout camp, we always have to try three bites,” offers my sister emphatically, sporting a sinister grin as she slurps the buttered spaghetti noodles she receives because she is a “picky eater.” My brother, the adventurous one, forks both oysters, closes his eyes, plugs his nose with his free hand, inserts both bivalves into his mouth at once, chews twice and swallows. He looks at me in my struggle, smiles a toothy, oyster-filled grin and asks loudly enough for mom to hear, “May I be excused?” As he speaks, oyster particles shoot out of his mouth onto my plate making a once gross meal inedible.

With my six generations of local family and 45 years of local service in industrial relations and job development, I’m dedicated to voting for the best representatives in our area. BINGHAM: A true conservative
Four years ago Bob Bingham educated the citizens of Kootenai County about our threatened land rights. We were able to fight against and defeat the 500-page ULUC. Bob did this as a favor to Kootenai County residents and was never paid for his work. Since there is now a second Land Use and Development Code being thrust on us, we don’t have time for on-the-job training, as would be necessary for the other candidates. Bob already knows this information and is ready to implement his expertise. He pledges to fight for us, remain true to his constituent base, never to trade a vote for any favor or benefit all while remaining completely transparent.
What happens when you snore?
The first thing that happens is that your bed partner, if you still have one, is irritated all the time due to sleep loss — usually one to two hours each night. The noise level can reach 80-100 decibels, which is the same noise a chainsaw makes. And, of course, this has health effects for both partners.
A grateful community and country
Sgt. Greg Moore wore the uniform of the Coeur d'Alene Police Department for 16 years. He was a husband and a father who, like all of those who make a career of public safety, protected and served his community. Like most of us one year ago, I was home sleeping while Sgt. Moore and his fellow officers throughout the county were patrolling neighborhoods with a watchful eye. But one year ago a senseless act of violence took Sgt. Moore’s life and future.

MACOMBER: Focus on freedom
We had the opportunity to meet Art Macomber running for the Idaho House for Seat 4A. We were so impressed with his focus on freedom, responsible government spending, a desire to bring about economic development through lower taxes and fewer restrictions on employers.
VOTE: For these candidates
After attending numerous candidate debates and forums, I believe the choices for Legislative District 4 are clear. After the debate between Rep. Sims and challenger Mr. Amador, Mr. Amador favored “Urban Renewal.” This made up my mind. Rep Sims must be re-elected. As we all know, our Urban Renewal board must listen to the voters. As for the other legislative seat between Rep. Malek and Mr. Macomber, we all know that Rep. Malek has done many good things for our state. Just ask any fireman! Mr. Macomber keeps saying that we should get the federal money out of Idaho and replace it with growth. Mr. Macomber is an ideologue and will hit a brick wall in Boise. I do believe experience counts and Rep. Malek should be re-elected.

CDA: A city with heart
As I sit on my front porch looking at the beautiful sky over Coeur d’Alene I find it imperative to share some recent thoughts. In the last few years I have been unfortunately witnessing a lot of friends and family members go through some type of struggle, loss of a family member, accident, and health issues to name a few and I have been overwhelmed and humbled by the amount of people in our wonderful community who have helped those seeking some type of assistance. Just this past weekend I was able to help (along with some other family members) to hold a benefit to raise money for a wonderful cause to help out my sister’s mother-in-law. I was skeptical at first as to how well this would go; needless to say I was blown away. We wanted to stay local and promote the great businesses in this area. To say we were supported would be an understatement. We had so many wonderful people and businesses donate to help for medical expenses as the woman in question had a brain tumor. It truly was a great experience to be a part of, seeing how everything comes together and seeing the reaction of a woman who is obviously loved by many.

Duane Rasmussen is our choice for Kootenai County commissioner. I’ve known Duane since about 2002 and have always known him to be a forthright and honest man. Part of the political arena?
New Idaho Freedom Foundation group attracts criticism from centrist GOP
COEUR d’ALENE — Since its inception in 2008, the charitable nonprofit Idaho Freedom Foundation has been criticized for what some say is questionable political activity, so this year the group formed a political advocacy nonprofit.
Big Sky: Homeward bound
Heart of Business: Shop local
For those who like to shop local, farmers markets are at the "way local" end of the spectrum and shopping online at Amazon is at the other end, said Dave Cavanaugh, local businessman and Heart of Business member.
Tea for two: Mothers & daughters

CDA: Proof city cares
Being a second generation business owner in this great city, I have been very pleased with the care that has been given to us. As a result our employees have been nervous of an impending accident.
PREP BASEBALL: Hawks take two, league title from Bulldogs
RATHDRUM — Jared McDaniel went 3 for 4 with three doubles and an RBI in the first game and Max Baker pitched four shutout innings in the second game, leading the Lakeland Hawks to a 9-3 and 5-3 sweep of the Sandpoint Bulldogs to clinch the 4A Inland Empire League championship on Saturday at Gorton Field.
DOGS: Unleashed fury
I was saddened and quite frankly enraged to read about William Yeager, the Sandpoint resident who was deprived of a guide dog due to his neighbors’ unrestrained dogs. What is it about North Idaho dog owners who seem to think they have the right to ignore leash laws?
AMADOR: He knows what matters
Politics are nowhere near my strong suit but where I find value in a candidate is when they genuinely take the time to explain their stance on the issues surrounding North Idaho. I have had the pleasure to work professionally with Paul Amador for the past two years. I can full-heartedly say that I support his candidacy for State Representative 4B.
PREP SOFTBALL: Sandpoint captures first league title in softball
RATHDRUM — Sandpoint had a big reason to be excited Saturday.
