Vickie Rae Slate, 61

| March 30, 2016 9:00 PM

Vickie Rae Slate was born on July 25, 1954, in Richmond, Calif., and passed away on March 27, 2016, under the wonderful care of the Hospice House in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, after her 25-year long battle with multiple sclerosis. She was a true fighter to the end.

Vickie was raised in Bakersfield, Calif., where she graduated from Foothill High School in 1972. After high school, Vickie pursued her career as a logistics specialist for the Civil Service for the U.S. Government serving in a variety of different positions through the years. During these years, Vickie was also an active member of the Church of the Nazarene in Susanville and Modesto, Calif., where she celebrated her faith and her love for the Lord.

Vickie met the love of her life, Daniel Slate and they were united in marriage in 1979 at the Victoria’s Wedding Chapel in Carson City, Nev. The 37 years that would come were full of love, happiness and unbelievable commitment.

Vickie spent her years enjoying numerous hobbies. She was one of the craftiest ladies you would ever meet. She was an incredible seamstress, having had a business on the side sewing many items including several wedding dresses. She was also talented in crocheting, painting and ceramics. Vickie loved nothing more than to go camping and boating with her family. She loved to listen to music, her favorite being country and western. Vickie had so many activities she enjoyed, but she was never afraid to go outside her norms and try something new. She was one brave lady.

Vickie is preceded in death by her father, Bill Miller and her mother, Maxine Miller.

Vickie is survived by her beloved husband, Dan Slate, of their home in Pinehurst, Idaho; one daughter, Angie (Ken) Owens of Rathdrum, Idaho; two sons, Aaron (Dana) Slate of Modesto and Anthony (Gina) of Reno, Nev.; siblings Aaron (Millie) Miller of Kingston, Idaho, and Francie Wiley of Modesto; grandchildren Brianna and Kacie Owens of Rathdrum, Nathanial, Jordan, Tyler, Brennan and Ashley Slate of Modesto, and Kaylee Slate of Reno. Vickie was also very excited as she has one great-granddaughter on the way.

Vickie was a devoted wife, mother, sister, aunt and grandmother. She was a woman who cherished life. Although it wasn’t an easy one, she made every second of her journey worth while. This was made evident through her never-ending sense of humor even when times were rough. She never failed to crack a joke making everyone’s faces beam from ear to ear. It is no question that every moment Vickie spent with friends and family was a special one. Vickie will be forever in the hearts of the ones she held dear.

Memorial services for Vickie will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, April 2, 2016, at the Kellogg Funeral Chapel, 106 S. Main St., Kellogg, Idaho, with Pastor Dan Nickerson officiating. A reception will follow the service at Vickie and Dan’s home in Pinehurst for time to cherish and reflect on memories of Vickie.
