PREP SOFTBALL: Lake City goes 3-1 at Nampa tourney

| March 27, 2016 9:00 PM

NAMPA — Lake City beat Pocatello 5-3 and Homedale 8-7 on Saturday to finish 3-1 at the Sugar Town tournament at West Park.

Against Nampa, Kim Cook homered and drove in a pair of runs, and Michaela Flerchinger struck out seven for Lake City. Reilly Williams also had two hits and drove in a pair of runs.

Against Homedale, Haley Loffer went 3 for 5 for Lake City, Heather Hawkes went 2 for 4 and scored twice, and Reilley Chapman was 2 for 4 and drove in two runs.

“It was a great day for Lake City softball on the diamond,” Lake City coach Jesse Lenz said. “We were put in situations that will help us learn and grow as a team. It was nice to come down and play some quality teams before we get a week of rest for spring break. I am very proud of the girls’ effort, and I believe we are making strides for the two qualities of good ball clubs — consistency and camaraderie.”

Lake City (5-2) returns to action April 11 at home vs. Lakeland.

ST. MARIES — Shelby Salois struck out 11 in the first game and three players drove in two runs each in the second game as the Tigers swept the Lumberjacks at City Park.

Kelsey Auer and Paige Sines had RBIs singles in the first inning of the opener, giving the Lumberjacks a 3-0 lead. Timberlake scored three unearned runs in a four-run fifth inning to rally for the win.

“We really, really gave this one away,” St. Maries coach Todd Bitterman said. “We had a little miscommunication on the infield and should have been out of the inning. We’ll chalk it up it being early in the season, but Timberlake hits the ball really well.”

Bethanie Hulce had three hits in the opener for Timberlake.

In the second game, Hannah McGrath, Madison Salois and Lilly Kelley had two RBIs each for Timberlake (3-0), which hosts Lakeland on April 7.

Auer had two RBIs in the second game for St. Maries (1-3), which hosts Freeman in a nonleague doubleheader on Monday at 2:30 p.m.

Sandpoint 11

West Valley 1

SANDPOINT — After getting blown out by more than 20 runs last season, there was no need for any motivation when the Bulldogs played West Valley in their home opener at Sandpoint Middle School.

Led by a dominating one-hit, 10-strikeout gem from starter Bri Baldree, the much-improved Bulldogs (2-2) washed away the memory of last season with 11-1 win over the Eagles, in a game that was called due to the 10-run rule.

Sandpoint head coach Elizabeth Hawkins-Williams called it a really fun day, and admitted the team had revenge on its mind.

“The team was hoping for redemption today,” said Hawkins-Williams, noting Baldree was hit on the foot and knocked off her feet by a first inning comebacker. “That hurts, but she toughed it out and played through that injury. She got strikeouts all over the zone, and kept them off balance.”

Battery-mate and catcher Sam Holland called a strong game behind the plate, and also did some damage at it, driving in two and scoring twice while picked up two of the Bulldogs’ four hits on the day. Cody Baldree added an RBI triple, and Alison Calvert laced a triple to the gap for the other hits, as the Bulldogs erupted for nine second inning runs to put the game away early.

Hawkins-Williams praised the play of Holland. “Not only did she work hard behind the plate, but was patient and had timely hitting,” said Hawkins-Williams, who team drew a lot of walks and made the Eagles pay on the bases. “The whole team ran bases aggressively, and it caused confusion.”

Sandpoint hosts Bonners Ferry in a doubleheader on Tuesday.
