PREP BASEBALL: Larson, Sundquist lead Bulldogs past Badgers

| March 27, 2016 9:00 PM

SANDPOINT — Sophomore Tyrone Larson ran his record to 2-0 on the season, pitching four solid innings, and Paul Sundquist ripped four hits to lead Sandpoint to an 8-4 win over Bonners Ferry in the second game of a nonleague baseball doubleheader on Saturday at War Memorial Field.

Larson has now yielded just one earned run in 10 innings of work, and along with reliever Wes Holland, helped hold the Badgers to just four hits. Sundquist striped two doubles among his four hits, helping awaken a struggling lineup that has been looking for a spark.

“He’s had a rough start, trying too hard, and today he woke up,” said Bulldogs head coach Scott Fitchett, also praising the early work of Larson. “He’s been keeping the ball down and throwing strikes.”

Sophomores Trey Flint and Jacob Commetto each had doubles, and Walker Jacobson added two hits for the Bulldogs (2-5), who finally broke through for a win in the third meeting in two days against the Badgers, a formidable 3A opponent.

In the opener, Bonners’ Jesse Dunham tossed a two-hit gem, keeping the Bulldogs off-balance in an 11-0 win.

Caleb Gering, Nick Sabin and Caleb Blackmore each had two hits for the Badgers in the opener, as they plated six runs in the first inning against Sandpoint starter Patrick Kummer. Bear Youngdahl came in to pitch in the first inning, and put up a few zeros before the Badgers put the game away with five more in the in the fifth.

The Bulldogs host Priest River in a doubleheader on Thursday.

Lake City beats Boise,

falls to Rocky Mountain

LEWISTON — Jarred Hall struck out five and walked none in a complete-game win for the Timberwolves against the Braves at Lewis-Clark State’s Harris Field.

Nathan Phillips and Kyle Manzardo hit two-run singles for Lake City in a five-run top of the second inning that proved to be the difference against Boise.

“We played great team baseball and had some good approaches at the plate,” Lake City coach Paul Manzardo said. “Jarred just did a great job on the mound and kept us in the game. He competed extremely well.”

Against Rocky Mountain, Dominic Conigliaro and Hall had RBIs for Lake City in the first inning, but the Grizzlies of Meridian were able to beat the Timberwolves as Rocky Mountain stole home with the go-ahead run in the sixth inning.

“It’s just unfortunate how that game ended,” Manzardo said. “We executed everything right, but missed the tag. When they were sliding, they also missed the plate and when the catcher went to tag him, the ball came loose. It was a great high school baseball game.”
