USDA - FOREST SERVICE Idaho Panhandle National Forests Coeur d'Alene River Ranger District Kootenai and Shoshone Counties, Idaho The Coeur d'Alene River Ranger District of the Idaho Panhandle National Forests is seeking comments on the Pre-commercial Thinning and Pruning 2016-2018 Project, which is a proposal to implement timber stand improvement (TSI) activities on approximately 2,131 acres of immature mixed conifer stands. Activities are proposed in the following drainages: Marie Creek, Skitwish Creek, Mason Creek, Curran Creek, Owl Creek, Gimlet Creek, Little Tepee Creek, Little Bumblebee Creek, Prado Creek, West Fork Steamboat Creek, Comfy Creek, West Fork Downey Creek, Sisson Creek, Bruce Creek, Tourist Creek, Sunday Gulch, Monday Gulch, Bobtail Creek, Scott Gulch, White Creek, Lost Creek, Deer Creek, Moore Gulch, Unknown Gulch, Tiger Gulch, and Idaho Gulch. The stands to be treated originated, on average, 12-25 years ago through planting and/or natural regeneration of harvested sites. These stands have become overstocked due to in-growth of trees. The proposed activities would reduce stock density, increase stand resiliency, and decrease susceptibility to insects and diseases in western larch, ponderosa pine, and white pine. Where white pine has been established, pruning is proposed as a tool to manage white pine blister rust infections and improve overall stand resiliency.
