Bagpipes, golf and cupcakes: what a day!

| March 23, 2016 9:00 PM

March came in like a lamb and is headed out the same way so it’s not surprising that there were golfers enjoying the game on the last day of winter this past Saturday.

Perhaps no one enjoyed the game quite as much as Jeff Mallett, who scored a hole-in-one at The Links in Post Falls. Jeff shot the ace on No.15, 195 yards uphill, playing with Eric Thomson and Steve Ford. Director of Golf at the Links, Darrell Hull, said the best part of the feat for Jeff was that Eric didn’t get a hole-in-one.

On St. Patrick’s Day the Albeni Falls Pipes & Drums performed Irish music and dance at O’Malley’s in Rathdrum to a packed house. One of those enjoying corned beef and cabbage along with the entertainment was a beautiful Irish lassie, Marcella Kelly Niemann, celebrating her 100th St. Patrick's Day. The 99-year-old was joined by her daughter, Marilyn Smith. In October, Marcella will celebrate a century of life.

High school student Raymond Bracmonte, 15, is an aspiring pastry chef. He’s also a volunteer at the Post Falls Senior Center. At the Gold Rush benefit dinner on Saturday, Raymond’s gold-flaked cupcakes with fondant picks, shovels and gold nuggets were a huge hit. Kudos to Raymond for following his passion and learning the value of volunteering.

Last week had more than one Monday for me if some of my bobbles are any indicator. After sharing on Facebook, it seems both were very relatable to others. First I attempted to use the word repertoire in an email and it took me three attempts to even come close enough to spelling it phonetically for my spellcheck to figure out what in the world word I meant. I used to excel in spelling but I must not be using that portion of my brain as much.

The second Monday moment came on Wednesday when I was heading out the door to begin a heavily scheduled day. In the garage I opened the passenger door of my car, tossed my purse, a package and keys on the seat before going around to the driver’s door which to my amazement was locked. The passenger door locked, too. Good grief!

So my phone and keys were locked in the car but luckily I found an extra house key and we still have a land line. I was able to call my first appointment with my tale of woe and then my husband, to his credit, came home to unlock the car. To his additional credit he never once said out loud what I’m sure he must have been thinking about my faux pas.

Just like not using the part of our brain that needs to remember how to spell words, I realized that we no longer need to remember anyone’s phone number because they’re on our phone. Unless of course your phone is in your purse which is locked in your car that’s parked in the garage. The good news is so far this week has contained only one Monday.
