PREP SOFTBALL: Vikings claw past Battle Ground, whip Southridge

| March 20, 2016 9:15 PM

RICHLAND, Wash. — Breana Burke struck out nine and scored a key insurance run in the bottom of the sixth inning, leading the Coeur d’Alene Vikings past the Battle Ground Tigers 4-2 at the Columbia Playfields on Saturday.

“Battle Ground, they’re a really good team,” Coeur d’Alene coach Darren Taylor said. “Their shortstop is as good as I’ve ever seen, next to ours. We had to make some great plays to keep them from scoring and Breana got into a rhythm. We just scratched around and played some great defense. For our first real test of the year, we passed with flying colors.”

Later, Kylie Smith and Burke drove in four runs each as the Vikings beat Southridge 23-1 in five innings.

Bailee Taylor drove in three runs against Southridge for Coeur d’Alene (4-0), which plays at Lakeland on April 5.

Chiawana

RICHLAND, Wash. — Trojans sophomore pitcher Amanda Rouse is back with a vengeance, after missing her entire freshman season with a knee injury, earning the win by striking out four and allowing one hit and no earned runs in a win in the Richland mixer at the Columbia Playfields.

“She kept the ball on the ground and kept us in the game,” Post Falls Brian Stranger said. “She’s done real well for us this season.”

Casey Goleeke 4 for 4 with two RBIs, while Allison Morris 2 for 4, two runs. caught both games.

Abby Melton hit a go-ahead, two-run double to give Post Falls the lead for good, then a six-run fourth inning gave the Trojans some cushion in another win during the Richland mixer.

“Abby had a nice two-run double with runners on second and third and two outs,” Stranger said. “They hit us hard, but we played great defense and our short game ate them alive.”

Post Falls (4-0), which had 14 hits, plays April 7 at home against Moscow.

LEWISTON — Bri Baldree had a stellar day on the mound, striking out 19 in a nine inning 5-2 loss in the opener, before the Bulldogs staged a wild rally to top the Bengals 13-12 and earn the split in a nonleague doubleheader at Airport Park.

Baldree also had two hits in the opener, including a double, but the Bulldogs (1-1) could not hold onto a one run lead in the seventh inning of the opener.

“Our team battled hard in both games. We were up 2-1 in the top of the 7th in the first game, and they came back and tied it,” said Bulldogs head coach Elizabeth Hawkins-Williams, praising the gutsy pitching of Baldree, the sophomore lefty. “Bri left her heart on the mound. When she hits her spots it makes the work a lot easier. Her changeup was good today.”

Alison Calvert hit a triple, and Cody Baldree, Bri Barlow and Kaitlan Ward each had a hit for the Bulldogs in the loss.

In the second game the Bulldogs put up a bunch of crooked numbers, as Bri Baldree had a triple among her three hits, and joined Cody Baldree and Danika Moore in driving in two runs apiece.

Ward relieved a tiring Baldree on the mound in the second game, and ended up driving in the winning run to secure her first varsity win. Cherri Lyn-Darrah was solid behind the plate in both games.

Tied at 12-12, Barlow got on base, was moved over by Calvert, before scoring the winning run on a Ward single.

“We were behind until the sixth inning. Moore had two clutch RBIs late in the game,” praised Hawkins-Williams. “When the bats got going, everyone contributed. It was great to see early in the season.”

Calvert, Ward and Cody Baldree each had two hits in the nightcap, while Barlow, Cheyenne Nicholson and Kenzie Crabb added hits.

“We were hesitant to swing the bats the first game,” said Hawkins-Williams. “In the second game we swung much more aggressively, that was the biggest difference in the two games.”

The Bulldogs ended the game with the bases loaded on a double play, as Ward fielded a comebacker, threw to catcher Ember Dewey, who then fired to first to end the game.

Sandpoint plays Tuesday in St. Maries.

Colville 18-4

Lakeland 10-1

RATHDRUM — Lakeland had 11 hits in the second game but scored just one run, leaving 12 on base as the Hawks were swept by the Indians in nonleague play.

“We had two innings with bases loaded and no outs and couldn’t score,” Lakeland coach Colleen Bevacqua said. “And in the three innings before those two, we had runners at second and third and couldn’t score. We have some work to do as far as getting those runners home.”

Darby Litzko and Katie Kastning each went 3 for 4 for Lakeland (1-3) in the second game.

In the first game, Baylee Main went 4 for 5 and Kaitlyn Petrey hit a two-run homer for Colville, which had 10 extra-base hits. Kari Prockish and Faith Bodak each went 3 for 4 for Lakeland, and Sam O’Meara was 3 for 3.

Lakeland plays host to Kellogg on Tuesday.

Kari Ghramm and Kelsey Auer scored three runs each in the opening game for St. Maries, which hosts Sandpoint on Tuesday at City Park.

The Lumberjacks lost the second game 13-9.

“I was real pleased with how we played today,” St. Maries coach Todd Bitterman said. “(St. Maries pitcher) Paige (Sines) threw the ball hard, but they just roped some pitches early in the (second) game. We could have folded in the tents, and we didn’t. Paige started throwing really well and we just kept chipping away. It was a good first outing of the year for us.”

Kayleen Peet hit a two-run homer in the first game for St. Maries.
