IDAHO ATHLETIC HALL OF FAME: Bieber headed for Idaho Hall of Fame

Former Coeur d’Alene High softball coach Larry Bieber heads a list of five people who will be inducted into the Idaho Athletic Hall of Fame this year.

Bieber will be joined by Sally Greene, Marvin Washington, Bob McCray and Bob Squires in ceremonies at the 54th annual North Idaho Sports Banquet, scheduled for April 9 at the Best Western Plus Coeur d’Alene Inn.

The 1964 state champion Kellogg High boys basketball team, coached by Don Haynes, will also be inducted.

Tickets will be available at the Coeur d’Alene Inn after March 15.

Bieber took over the Coeur d’Alene High softball program in 1994, winning the last of a long string of state slowpitch titles. In fastpitch, he guided the Vikings to state 19 times in 21 years, winning five state titles and finishing second eight times. Bieber retired following the 2015 season with an overall fastpitch record of 465-153 and overall record of 483-155.

Greene, a Lewiston High grad, coached tennis, softball and golf at Moscow High, but was known mostly for her success as girls basketball coach. She guided the Bears to four state titles in five years (1992, ’93, ’94 and ’96) and boasted an overall record of 239-90.

Washington was a standout defensive end for the Idaho Vandal football team and a good rebounder for the basketball squad from 1987-88. In 1988, Washington sacked opposing quarterbacks a then-school-record 14.5 times for 83 yards lost. His 1988 total currently ranks third all-time at Idaho. Washington was chosen by the New York Jets in the sixth round of the 1989 NFL Draft and he played for 11 seasons with the New York Jets, Denver Broncos and San Francisco 49ers, compiling 40.5 career sacks and one interception. He was a member of the Denver Broncos’ 1998 Super Bowl-winning team.

McCray, who played football and wrestled at the University of Idaho in the 1960s, was a successful football assistant at the college level at several stops, and later was a successful football and softball coach at Mead and Mt. Spokane.

Squires was a high school coach and teacher in Idaho for 42 years, including the final 37 in Kamiah. He was head boys track coach at Kamiah for 29 years and head girls track coach for 16 years. His teams combined to win 37 district and regional titles, and eight state titles — five by the boys. While at Kamiah, Bob coached 53 individual state champions and posted a combined 238 regular season, district, regional, and state meet victories.
