GUNS: 'Most sacred liberty'

| June 22, 2016 9:00 PM

In response to “Assault Weapons Out” by Turns East in the June 17 Press, your letter to the editor is representative of the ignorance that prevails in our society today. In “mass shootings” involving the deaths of four people or more over the last 30 years in this country, an average of 18 people per year have been killed. By comparison, an average of more than 12,000 people per year are killed by drunk drivers in this country. Yet there is no clamor to ban alcohol, maybe since Prohibition didn’t work the first time?

The FBI’s own statistics have shown that semi-automatic “assault” weapons account for only about 8 percent of crimes involving guns. Our Founders gave us the Second Amendment, NOT to give us the right to hunt or target shoot, but to allow us to protect ourselves from enemies like Omar Mateen. Instead of attacking our most sacred liberty, why don’t you channel your rage toward the policies of a president who is raping our economy, gutting our military, coddling our enemies and belittling those of us apostates who don’t follow the Prophet? There are millions of Americans who are tired of shoveling this manure, and you may soon witness in this country what rage really is! In correspondence from November 1787, Thomas Jefferson said: “The tree of Liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants.” Each of us will fall into one of those two categories. Which will you choose?
