Go softly. Panhandle Carpet One Floor & Home sees resurgence of remodeling projects

Go Softly

When it came to replacing the old carpet in Diane Kamphaus’ Hayden home, the choice wasn’t hard.

Softness was at the top of her list. In addition to a soft carpet, Kamphaus installed a healthier living pad,  which helps reduce allergens, dust and mold.

“It’s cushy,” she said. “We can finally sit on the floor again. When the old carpet was removed it was found that someone had put carpet over concrete without installing a pad. New carpet made a big difference for us.”

Donny Kimball, owner of Panhandle Carpet One Home and Floor, said consumers often buy high quality materials for their homes and then in an effort to save a few dollars do the installation work themselves.

“Don’t don’t do it yourself,” said Kimball.  “Let our experts do it for you.”

Kamphaus is part of a trend of consumers embracing softer carpets and cooler colors, said the Panhandle Carpet One Home and Floor sales  team.

“We are seeing a lot of customers buy custom shag rugs to cover their hardwood floors as a centerpiece,” said Kimball. “The shag rugs are very comfortable.”

Kamphaus said improvements in carpet technology and long-term warranties also allowed her to go with a light cream color. She hopes this will add to the resale value of her home.

Carpet technology continues to advance as manufacturers are incorporating stain-resistant materials found in commercial settings into carpets for the family home. The old examples of throwing dirt on a carpet have been replaced by more extreme examples, such as the carpet maker, Mohawk, placing its carpet in the enclosed area of a rhinoceros for two weeks.

“Polyester carpets have improved a lot in the last few years,” said Kimball. “They’re performing better than the old polyesters 10, 15 years ago.”

Pamela Asher has remodeled several homes in the last five years. She recently replaced everything in her Post Falls home and had Panhandle Carpet One Floor & Home install new hardwood, wool carpet, and tile.

“We gutted everything,” said Asher. “We went with natural things, wood and stone. We used a lot of traditional materials. The flooring is a natural wood with a rough look. We put wool carpet in our bedroom.”

Asher, an art teacher at Lake City High School, prefers subtle flooring choices for her home and was glad she had Panhandle Carpet One installed instead of doing it herself.

“They did a fantastic job,” she said.

Asher’s home is one of many as a surge of remodeling projects is hitting the area.

“Big time,” Kimball said. “We’re extremely busy going into new homes. People are either wanting to flip their home or they’re wanting to update it with new carpet or flooring.”
