LEGION BASEBALL: Prairie notches first win

| June 12, 2016 9:00 PM

POST FALLS — The Prairie Cardinals picked up their first win ove the year, beating the Orofino Merchants 4-3, before falling to the Missoula Prospects 11-7 on Saturday at the School’s Out Classic at Post Falls High.

Brock Zeller pitched a three-hitter against Orofino for Prairie (1-6), allowing three unearned runs and striking out four. Tanner Call went 2 for 2, including a walk-off single in the bottom of the seventh to score Dusty Weeks.

“It was a great feeling to get our first win of the season,” Prairie coach Brian Fowler said. “I thought our team came out with much improved focus from the previous day.”

Against Missoula, Jerrett Plunkett went 3 for 4 for the Cardinals.

“I thought our team battled well throughout the game,” Fowler said. “In the end we just made a few too many mistakes to beat ourselves.”

Prairie plays the Spokane Expos today at 4:30 at Post Falls High.

POST FALLS — Tanner Call went 2 for 3 with two RBIs for the Cardinals, in a game shortened to four innings due to a tourney time limit.

“Steady rain made for less than ideal playing conditions, but our team has to learn to play through these types of adversity if we want to be successful,” Fowler said. “Seventeen walks is not something that our pitching staff can do if we want to put ourselves in position to win a ballgame.”
