Following the new housing

A lot of the “new” business action continues to shift in the direction of the new housing developments to the north and west.

This time it’s Prairie Shopping Center between Government Way and Highway 95 north of Prairie Avenue. Plan for most of the action on Father’s Day weekend.

1920s Soda Fountain a unique dessert shop

Old-fashioned favorites will be featured at the 1920s Soda Fountain in Suite 105 beside Java Hayden and The Local Deli.

The menu will include dreamland sundaes, bullmoose, milkshakes, homemade ice cream and “foodie” favorites of ghost-pepper chocolates and egg creams. Sodas will come from the family-owned Tractor Soda Co.

Owner Cheyenne Potter and her sisters will operate the place noon to 9 p.m. Monday through Saturday, with Sunday hours to be determined.

Junior’s Barbecue will customize orders

A few doors away in Suite 85 (formerly various pizza places) Cheyenne’s brother Travis Potter Jr. will open Junior’s Barbecue.

Customers can choose their own style of bread, meats, sides, tacos, salads, Tractor Sodas and organic custard. Seating for about 60 will be in truck-bed booths, picnic tables and bar stools. To-go orders also are an option. Adult beverages will be available later.

“It’ll be like a big barbecue tailgate party,” Travis said. “It’ll be a rustic, fun, industrial atmosphere.”

Hours will be 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 1-8 p.m. Sundays.

Beau Monde Exchange moves from Ironwood

Name-brand preloved clothing, shoes and accessories are offered at Beau Monde Exchange. The store will open June 21 next to Qdoba in Prairie Shopping Center.

Now in Suite C of Ironwood Square (which contains Albertson’s, off Government Way), hours are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday and noon to 5 p.m. Sundays. Hours will expand in the new location.

Brooke Miller has had the business for 15 years. She sells, buys and consigns items for toddlers through adults. With the business name meaning “World of Style,” items include all accessories

Panera Bread under construction

It won’t open until August or September, but Panera Bread is under construction on the pad formerly occupied by Burger King on the west side of Prairie Shopping Center.

With dine-in and a drive-through, Panera will offer breads, pastries, breakfasts, soups, salads, paninies, sandwiches, kids meals and online catering.

Based in Missouri, the company started in 1981 and has 1,972 outlets in 46 states. One recently opened on East Indiana Avenue in Spokane Valley.

Now for the Tidbits

- Still with Prairie Shopping Center, Hancock Fabrics will join its sister stores in closing soon.

- Watch for news on Dickey’s Barbecue outside Silver Lake Mall, 777 Take-n-Bake Pizza on Best Avenue, G.I. Java Coffee House on Fourth Street, Rogers’ Burgers, Popeye’s, Green & Grounds Coffee Shop, Silverlake Auto and The Lean Bean in Post Falls, An Escape Game on Third Street, a new business next to Clark’s Jewelry downtown and Empire Eye, Grille From Ipanema and Custom Den (engraving) in Riverstone.

- Other new places coming include Landmark Storage behind Neider Retail Center, Alta Dance Academy, Hayden Medical Plaza & Clinics in Hayden and Cracker Barrel (June 20) and Orban Family Dental near Winco.

- Something interesting may be happening to the old Wards and Wiggett Antiques building at Fourth and Lakeside.

- Words with the prefix “pre” have the “pre-” hyphenated if it’s followed by an “e” such as pre-election.

- The world only beats a path to your door when you’re in the bathroom.
