LEGION BASEBALL: Lums bow out at state AA tourney

BOISE — After a couple of victories in the losers bracket, Coeur d’Alene’s stay in the state AA American Legion baseball tournament came to an end Friday with a 14-3 loss to the Boise Capitals at Timberline High.

McCabe Compton hit an RBI double in the fourth inning for the Lumbermen, who finished 15-26.

“Unfortunately the score doesn’t tell the story of how hard our guys played today,” Coeur d’Alene coach Zach Clanton said. “The guys battled their butts off all week; I’m so proud of these guys. I didn’t really think we would be here halfway through the year.

It was the Lums’ 11th trip to state in 12 seasons, and second in three years under Clanton, a former Lum.

“I really thought we had a chance, but some of our inexperience showed,” he said. “A plus about it is knowing those inexperienced guys are going to be back for another year or two and make runs of their own.”

Nolan Jekich hit a three-run home run in the first inning for Boise, and finished 3 for 6 with two doubles, three runs and four RBIs. Hunter Weindel went 3 for 5 and drove in three runs for the Capitals.

“The Caps are a great program and we respect the heck out of them,” Clanton said. “Gotta tip your cap to their hitters.”
