LEGION BASEBALL: Late-inning rally keeps Lumbermen alive at state

BOISE — Nine runs in their last three at bats kept the Coeur d’Alene Lumbermen alive at the state AA American Legion baseball tournament at Timberline High.

Kaleb Reid’s sacrifice fly scored Reegan Jacobson with the go-ahead run in the top of the ninth inning, lifting the Lumbermen past the Boise Gems 12-11 in a loser-out game Thursday.

Coeur d’Alene (15-25) trailed 8-3 heading into the seventh inning.

“A game that neither team wanted to win at times,” said Lums coach Zach Clanton, noting the teams combined for 13 errors. “We did a great job of capitalizing in the late innings. So proud of the guys for battling back and getting a ‘W’ today.”

Coeur d’Alene will face the Boise Capitals today at 3 PDT in a loser-out game. The Capitals lost 11-0 to the Idaho Falls Bandits, but the Bandits will play the Lewis-Clark Twins instead today, as the Twins have already faced the Capitals in the tourney.

Catcher Reegan Jacobson went 4 for 5 with two RBIs and three runs scored for Coeur d’Alene.

“Reegan really came into his own when he became the mainstay behind the dish — four hits today, and some of them clutch as can be with two strikes,” Clanton said.

Reid and Jarred Hall each drove in three runs, and Hall held the Gems to one run in two innings of relief to collect the win.

“Jarred did a great job coming in and slamming the door,” Clanton said. “It has been a wild tournament and we are ready to go again tomorrow.”

TWIN FALLS — Bennett Cunningham drove in the game’s first run in the top of the first inning for Coeur d’Alene, but the Wranglers scored seven times in the bottom of the fifth to bring the first-round game at Canyon Ridge High to an early ending.

“The score wasn’t an accurate portrayal of what happened today,” Lums coach Pat Capone said. “We hit the ball hard all day, just right at guys. They had lady luck on their side today. I’ve got to give them credit, they put the ball in play and we didn’t execute. We had our chances today, but that’s baseball. You win some, you lose some. The great thing is the sun comes up tomorrow and we’ve got another game.”

Coeur d’Alene (26-20) plays the loser of Thursday’s late game between Twin Falls and Nampa today at noon PDT.
