LEGION BASEBALL: Lums make noise, top Rocky Mountain

| July 28, 2016 9:00 PM

BOISE — Coeur d’Alene coach Zach Clanton said his team was going to make some noise in the Class AA state American Legion baseball tournament this week at Timberline High.

On Wednesday, the crack of Nathan Phillips’ bat was the sound they were looking for.

Phillips’ singled with two outs in the ninth inning to score Daniel Gunnerson as the Lumbermen beat Rocky Mountain 2-1 in a loser out game.

“Today was one heck of a game for these guys,” Clanton said. “They did such a good job of battling the entire day.”

McCabe Compton doubled to score Brandon Stott with the tying run in the seventh for Coeur d’Alene (14-25).

“Clutch knocks from McCabe to tie it and from Nate to win it,” Clanton said. “It was awesome.”

Dominic Conigliaro struck out six and allowed six hits over eight innings for Coeur d’Alene, which faces the tournament host Boise Gems today in a loser out game at 3 p.m. PDT.

“Dom threw one of the best games I’ve seen him throw in the three years he’s been with me,” Clanton said. “He did it on short rest and did exactly what was needed to get a win. I teared up when I took him out today. It might be the last time I do that in his career. It was a special day for me in that regard.”

Rocky Mountain of Meridian finishes 15-20.

“There was so much emotion and competitiveness from both teams and coaching staffs,” Clanton said. “It made this such a fun game to be a part of. Our group is going to get after it tomorrow.”
