LEGION BASEBALL: Lums drop opener at state in extra innings

| July 27, 2016 9:00 PM

CLASS AA

BOISE — Brandon Stott hit a game-tying solo home run in the seventh inning for the Coeur d’Alene Lumbermen, but the Treasure Valley Stars of Ontario, Ore., scored three runs in the top of the 10th to beat the Lums 5-2 in the opening round of the Class AA state American Legion baseball tournament on Tuesday at Timberline High.

Kaleb Reid singled to score McCabe Compton to give Coeur d’Alene a 1-0 lead in the third inning. Both Stott and Reid had two hits each for Coeur d’Alene (13-25).

Treasure Valley scored two runs on an RBI single to take a 4-2 lead in the 10th.

Thomas Robinson struck out three over six innings for Coeur d’Alene, allowing two earned runs.

“Tom threw his tail off today and gave us every chance to win,” Coeur d’Alene coach Zach Clanton said. “He’s one pitch away of coming out of that ball game with the lead and getting a ‘W’. I’m proud of the way he chucked it today. Brandon’s home run got us a ton of momentum. I truly thought we were going to get the win at that point. I think we had gotten a 0 in the top of the 10th, we would have won it. Unfortunately, it didn’t go our way.”

Coeur d’Alene will face Rocky Mountain in a loser-out game today at 9 a.m. PDT. Rocky Mountain lost to the Idaho Falls Bandits 9-5.

“We’ve got to be warriors and go through the losers bracket,” Clanton said. “This team is going to make some noise.”
