HUNTINGTON BEACH, Calif. — Martha Tooley hit a grand slam and Breana Burke struck out seven and allowed four hits in a 4-0 win against the New Jersey Intensity Mizuno 18 Gold in the opening round of bracket play at the Premier Girls Fastpitch National tournament at the Fountain Valley Sports Complex on Tuesday.

Later, Burke, Haley Loffer, Hannah Bell and Kylie Smith went 2 for 4 in a 5-3 loss to the Artesia Punishers of Southern California.

“We just had some bad breaks and a couple of errors,” North Idaho Xtreme coach Travis Smith said. “We just had a few mishaps that cost us the game.”

The Xtreme will have to win three games today to continue in the tournament.

In pool play earlier this week, the Xtreme beat the Corona Angels 6-3, New Jersey Intensity Mizuno 18 Gold 2-1, Lady Blues of South Carolina 8-2 and Next Generation of Texas 5-4. They lost to Nationals 18 Gold of Illinois 8-2.
