Girls showcase tourney nears: The sixth annual Summer Heat Showcase, an NCAA-certified girls basketball event, is scheduled for this Saturday and Sunday at the Warehouse Athletic Facility, 800 N. Hamilton in Spokane, or at nearby Gonzaga Prep.

As it is a showcase event, teams will play a fixed number of predetermined opponents. There is no championship game.

Coaches from many colleges in the West, as well a few coaches from the rest of the country, are expected to be in attendance, evaluating the players.

The tourney consists of Elite and All-Star Divisions. The North Idaho Elite, consisting of many of the top players in North Idaho, are in the Elite tourney, along with the Spokane Stars Blue and the Spokane Sandpipers Black.

“Between the North Idaho Elite, the Stars and the Sandpipers, we’ll probably have close to 8-10 Division I kids between the three teams,” said Ron Adams, tourney organizer.

Among the other Elite squads entered are Eastbay Explosion Black from the Bay Area, ESA Bucky’s Elite from the Seattle area, and Hoop Dreams from the Boise area. A handful of players from North Idaho are also on some of the other rosters.

Games begin Saturday at 9 a.m., and conclude Sunday around 6 p.m.

The North Idaho Elite is scheduled to play the East Bay Explosion on Saturday at noon at the Warehouse, Montana Elite on Saturday at 2:40 p.m. at Gonzaga Prep, the Montana Breakers on Sunday at 1:20 p.m. at the Warehouse, and Hoop Dreams on Sunday at 4 at the Warehouse.

A day pass is $10; admission for students and seniors is $7.
