Powwow: shared culture, tradition
After a one-year hiatus, the Coeur d’Alene Tribe’s Julyamsh Tribal Encampment and Powwow returns — this time to the Kootenai County Fairgrounds, Friday through Sunday.
The first Julyamsh in 1998 and all of the years since have been a generous gift of shared culture and sacred traditions of dance, drums and prayer. Powwows are celebrations, social gatherings and friendly dance competitions surrounded by ceremonial traditions and teachings.
If you've never attended, please make a point to experience the horse parade and grand entry, when all of the dancers enter the arena with the centerpiece of the warriors color guard. The sights, sounds and traditions are unique to these native peoples gatherings, a singularly impactful experience for all who attend. Huy, 'isnme 'Itsi'n (welcome home), Coeur d'Alene Tribe.
The schedule for each day is at www.julyamsh.com.

It might have looked like a Big and Tall Man convention at the Hagadone Event Center over the weekend but it was a wedding featuring a really tall (7 feet) groom and his beautiful bride.
The couple are college sweethearts from Gonzaga where the groom played basketball. Since 2012 he has been playing in the NBA with the Los Angeles Lakers so the guest list included some similarly tall and familiar faces from both the Zags and the Lakers.
Best wishes to newlyweds Robert and Vinessa (Davis) Sacre. Seems fitting that a Laker was married on the lake in Coeur d’Alene.

Brad Dugdale is either really lucky or a really good golfer. On Sunday morning he made a hole-in-one on No. 11 at the Hayden Lake Country Club.
Brad’s no one-hit-wonder; it was his second time to ace a hole at Hayden Lake,
previously on No. 4. He’s also scored a hole-in-one at the Butte Country Club.

When Post Falls American Legion Post 143 commander Dennis Wheeler was hospitalized after an automobile crash on Saturday, he wasn’t the only local Legion commander receiving care at Kootenai Health. Rathdrum’s Post 154 commander Dee Sasse was also in residence having spent several days recovering from pneumonia. Speedy recovery to them both!
