ROSAUERS OPEN GOLF: A round to remember

Bayley cards record round to take lead

LIBERTY LAKE — There are good days on the golf course.

And then there’s the round that former Lakeland High standout and rising Washington State junior Derek Bayley put forth in the second round of the 29th Rosauers Open at MeadowWood Golf Club.

Bayley posted an 18-hole tournament record 59, 13-under par — making 11 birdies and one eagle — on the way to posting the lowest score in a Pacific Northwest PGA major.

“Before this, my previous best was a 65, so I surpassed that by quite a bit,” said Bayley with a laugh. “Not much wasn’t working for me. I just found the fairway on each hole.”

Bayley shot an opening round 67 on Friday, and now leads the tournament by two strokes over PGA Professional Reid Martin of Legion Memorial Golf Course in Everett, Wash.

“My goal today was to get something going and put myself in a position to win tomorrow (Sunday),” Bayley said. “And I certainly did that.”

Bayley, who started on the back nine on Saturday, added that he knew he was close to the course record midway through the round.

“I was just in rythmn all day,” Bayley said. “I was just trying to stay in the moment. Right after birdie on 15th to get to 10-under on the day. I had to finish the last three with a birdie and when I got the eagle on No. 17, I knew a par on the last hole could do it.”

Amateur Reid Hatley of Hayden Lake Country Club is tied for fifth with a 66-67—133. Taylor Porter of Avondale Golf Club is tied for 26th at 74-65—139.
