Whalen takes first-round lead at Rosauers

LIBERTY LAKE — Amateur Andrew Whalen from Lakeview Golf and Country Club in Soap Lake, Wash., shot an 8-under-par 64 for a one-stroke lead after the first round of the 29th Rosauers Open Invitational on Friday at MeadowWood Golf Course.

Whalen carded six birdies and an eagle.

PGA Professional Brian Thornton of Meridian Valley Country Club in Kent, Wash., and amateur Joe Harvie of the Classic Golf Course in Spanaway, Wash., are tied for second.

Four others, including amateur Reid Hatley of Hayden Lake Country Club, are two strokes out of the lead.

Derek Bayley of Rathdrum, a rising junior at Washington State, shot a 5-under 67 and is tied for eighth. Pros Billy Bomar of Prairie Falls and Russell Grove of Twin Lakes Village each shot 2-under 70s and are tied for 25th.

Others locals at par or better: Bobby Myles (Prairie Falls) and Darin Vaughan (Twin Lakes Village) each shot 1-under 71s, and Ryan McKinney (The Highlands), Tim Morton (StoneRidge) and Austin Westphal (Avondale) all shot 72s.

The 54-hole tournament continues today and concludes Sunday.
