Clarice Hancock Webb, 99
Clarice Hancock Webb, 99, of Coeur d’Alene, went to be with her Heavenly Father on July 9, 2016, with family at her side. Clarice was born Clarice Hancock on June 22, 1917, Winthrop, Wash., and was No. 5 of six children born to Zula Mae and Clarence Hancock who were early settlers in the Winthrop area.
Clarice would fondly recall going to school in the winter in Winthrop in a horse-drawn sleigh. After graduating from high school she attended Kinman Business College in Spokane and went to work for Bell Telephone in Spokane. While working in Spokane, she met her future husband, Clifford B. Webb and they were married in Coeur d’Alene on Dec. 27, 1941. Clifford went on to serve in the U.S. Army in the South Pacific for four years while Clarice worked in Spokane. After Cliff returned from the South Pacific, Clarice and Cliff moved to St. Maries, Idaho, where they started a mink ranch. While in St. Maries, Clarice worked with city treasury and was a paralegal for a number of years. Cliff and Clarice moved to Post Falls, Idaho, in 1968 where they continued to run the business. She was active in various women’s groups in the area. Clarice and Cliff were happily married for 47 years. Cliff passed away in 1988.
On July 22, 1989, Clarice married Otto Braun in Coeur d’Alene and they resided briefly in the Kellogg area before moving to Coeur d’Alene. They enjoyed going on cruises and dancing at the Eagles in Coeur d’Alene. They attended St. Thomas Catholic Church. Otto passed away in 2008 after 19 years of marriage.
In 2010, Clarice met Jesse Brown, who became a special person in her life. They enjoyed going to the lake and sitting under “their” tree. They enjoyed their time together before Jesse passed away in 2014.
Clarice was active in the Coeur d’Alene senior center as well as being a very accomplished pinochle player. She played weekly at the Jewett House well into her 90s. Clarice was a fantastic cook who could whip up a delicious home-cooked meal in a matter of minutes using “secret” recipes. One of Clarice’s great enjoyments was caring for her flowers and garden at her house in Coeur d’Alene. Clarice also enjoyed reading her Bible every night before bed. She was a woman of deep faith who prayed with all her heart. Clarice always had a friendly smile for all strangers and those who knew her.
Clarice was preceded in death by her sisters, Belva and Cleo; and her brothers, John and Kelly; as well as her husbands, Cliff and Otto.
Clarice is survived by her sister, Chloe, who is 104, and sister-in-law Mary Hancock. Clarice is also survived by her children, Janet Hadley (Steve) of Spokane, Dean Webb (Patty) of Seattle and Clarke Webb (Rita) of Coeur d’Alene; as well as six grandchildren: Theresa, Kurt, Austin, Ben, Nate and Joshua.
The family would like to thank the staff at Renaissance as well as the staff at Hospice of North Idaho for their loving care. Clarice requested no funeral and will be cremated. Her family will hold a private memorial and celebration of life at a later date. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to Hospice of North Idaho.
