ASA SOFTBALL: Xtreme take state, opening two at Champions Cup

| July 14, 2016 9:00 PM

The North Idaho Xtreme 18-and under softball team won its seventh state championship in the last eight years on Sunday in the rain-shortened tournament at the Willow Lane Athletic Complex.

After going 3-0 to open the tournament, the Xtreme ran into rain in the scheduled championship game at noon, eventually having the game called off while trailing to the Idaho Crush. Tournament officials called off the tournament after three innings after rain made field conditions unplayable. Due to a prior commitment to play in the Championship Cup in Irvine, Calif., the Xtreme were unable to finish the tournament on Monday.

“We had a bunch of rain and had a four hour rain delay before getting started,” Xtreme coach Travis Smith said. “We got to playing and the weather got worse, and we had to get home to catch a flight to California, so we couldn’t stay and finish the tournament.”

Kylie Smith went 3 for 4 in a 9-2 in the opening round against the Idaho Crush.

Breana Burke pitched a complete game three-hitter in the team’s 12-0 win over the Boise Blast and Kelsey Gumm struck out 10 in the team’s 3-0 win over the Idaho Falls Scrubs to advance to the championship game.

On Wednesday, the Xtreme opened the Champions Cup with a 4-3 win against the South Bay Mizuno Diamond Girls and a 9-4 win against Massachusetts Rapids Gold.

Hannah Bell went 2 for 4 with two RBIs and two runs scored and Kyla Stern went 2 for 3 in the win against South Bay.

Against Massachusetts Rapids Gold, Kylie Smith went 3 for 4 with two RBIs and a run scored, Haley Loffer went 2 for 3 with two runs scored and Kelsey Gumm struck out 10 in six innings for the Xtreme.

They will continue with pool play games today and Friday.
