Helping pay for college

| July 12, 2016 9:00 PM

The University of Idaho is awarding more than $11 million in scholarship support to more than 4,000 Idaho residents for the 2016-17 academic year, as part of President Chuck Staben’s commitment to making higher education accessible and affordable to all of Idaho’s residents.

For the upcoming year, UI has awarded more than $25 million in scholarship support to more than 5,500 students from 47 states.

“We are committed to making higher education accessible to all students — financial hardships should not stand in the way of anyone wishing to achieve an advanced degree,” said Dan Davenport, director of Student Financial Aid Services. “The University of Idaho understands that a college degree is something worth investing in, and we believe our students are worth investing in, too.”

These scholarships are a combination of merit, need-based and outstanding achievement awards. Many of the scholarships are funded privately by the University of Idaho Foundation, Inc., through the generosity of donors and alumni.

Recent data from the U.S. Department of Education’s College Scorecard places UI above other Idaho public institutions for graduation rate and average salaries after graduation, and below other Idaho four-year institutions in cost. More than half of UI’s students receive federal assistance to help pay for college.

UI students will receive an additional $100 million in financial assistance through state and federal programs. Through a combination of scholarships, state and federal financial assistance, the University of Idaho will provide more than $125 million to students and families to help pay for college for 2016-17.
