SUICIDE: No laughing matter
I was unsettled after reading the comics on Friday, July 1. The comic “WUMO” by Wulff & Morgenthaler depicts a man preparing to commit suicide for what was intended by the artist to be deemed as trivial reasons. By presenting this comic, though it was in jest, you are contributing to the stigma that many people face. Because of the stigma associated with suicide and mental health issues, many people who need help do not seek it.
Suicide is not funny. It is heartbreaking. I encourage you to take a stand in the future and refuse to contribute to the harmful stereotypes, prejudice, and discrimination directed at those with mental illness. Please let those living with mental illness or living with someone who has a mental illness that they can seek support through National Alliance on Mental Illness www.nami.org.
