Update: Drowning victim recovered from lower Twin Lake

| July 1, 2016 12:03 PM

The holiday weekend is getting off to a tragic start in Twin Lakes today as divers continue to search for a suspected drowning victim.

Before going under the water, the 65-year-old man had jumped from a stopped boat to cool off in the lake at Twin Lakes Village, said Jim Lyon, spokesman for Northern Lakes Fire District.

“He came back up and indicated he needed help,” Lyon said.

The man, whose name has not yet been released, then disappeared from sight of his wife and family members who were boating with him.

Local residents heard people screaming for help on the water, Lyon said. Emergency crews were called and some local people swam out to assist.

The Kootenai County Sheriff’s Office’s dive team responded and spent more than 90 minutes under water searching.

“They haven’t been able to see anything,” Lyon said. “The visibility is about 10 feet into the water. It’s murky.”

The rescue effort was then transitioned to a recovery, Lyon said, due to the length of time the man has been submerged.
