Roland S. Almgren, 79
Roland S. Almgren, of Coeur d’Alene, passed away quietly on Jan. 14, 2016, three days short of his 80th birthday. He suffered a sudden heart attack on Jan. 11, 2016, after enjoying a steak dinner. Roland was born in South Dakota on Jan. 17, 1936.
Raised in Huntington Beach, Calif., Roland graduated from California State University of Long Beach with a B.A. in history, and served in the U.S. Army. In 1968, he moved his family up to Redding, Calif., where he spent many years teaching before moving into the role of Principal. Early 1980, he moved back down to Southern California to be closer to his mother. After her passing, Coeur d’Alene called his name, and he has enjoyed living up here ever since.
He loved jazz music, attending the Spokane Symphony, breakfasts and lunches at “Le Peep,” a good martini and greeting everyone at Peak Wellness Center, and most of all he loved worship and fellowship at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church. The owner and operator of Lake City Transportation, he stayed youthful helping others get around.
He is survived by his two daughters, Esther Pena, husband Al and Laura Calnon, husband Rob. He has three grandchildren; Katelyn, Nicholas and Alyssa; and one great-grandchild, Christopher.
Roland’s family would like to thank the staff at Kootenai Health, ICU. They did everything they could to help him fight, but in the end, he was as comfortable as possible.
A celebration of life service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 6, 2016, at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, 501 E. Wallace Ave., Coeur d’Alene, ID 83814.
