NIC BASKETBALL: Guice, Dowd spark Cardinals
• MEN’S BASKETBALL
EPHRAIM, Utah — Kyle Guice, the former Lake City High standout, finished with 17 points and five rebounds while helping hold Utah State commit Norbert Janicek to four points, guiding the third-ranked North Idaho Cardinals past the Snow College Badgers 83-65 in Scenic West Athletic Conference play on Saturday afternoon at the Horne Activity Center.
Guice hit 4 of 5 of his 3-pointers in the first half, 5 of 9 from beyond the 3-point line, helping NIC (25-0, 10-0 SWAC) jump out to a 45-18 halftime lead.
“We picked up the pace, we got them sped up a little bit and they turned it over a lot early,” NIC assistant coach George Swanson said. “And we hit shots.”
Nate Moore and Braden Koelliker each scored 15 points for Snow (12-13, 4-6).
“Kyle did a good job on defense and we exposed (Janicek) on offense,” Swanson said. “He didn’t have the foot speed to stay with (Guice) on the offensive end.”
Sam Dowd scored 16 points off the bench for NIC, which hosts Southern Idaho next Saturday at 5 p.m.
CSI (19-6, 7-3) won at 16th-ranked Salt Lake (20-5, 7-3) 78-67 on Saturday for the Golden Eagles’ fourth straight win. CSI and Salt are tied for second, three games behind NIC with five league games remaining.
