PREP ROUNDUP: Post Falls girls fend off Coeur d'Alene

COEUR d’ALENE — Leading by six points with 1:23 left, Post Falls hit 6 of 6 free throws to pull away for a 58-46 victory over Coeur d’Alene in 5A Inland Empire League girls basketball Thursday night at Elmer Jordan Court.

Bayley Brennan made 4 of 4 from the free-throw line down the stretch for Post Falls (12-8, 4-2 5A IEL), and Abby Gennett hit a pair.

“We had a chance,” Coeur d’Alene coach Dale Poffenroth said. “It was a four-point game with three minutes left and we had the ball, but we couldn’t score. I thought we played very well; it was a close game for the most part.”

Melody Kempton scored 21 points, Brennan 13 for Post Falls.

Senior Emily Callahan scored 17 points on senior night for Coeur d’Alene (8-12, 0-6), and Rey Louden added 13. Isabella Hollibaugh had seven rebounds, and Kayla Fagan had seven boards and three assists.

Post Falls visits Moscow tonight in its regular season finale, and Coeur d’Alene wraps up the regular season Saturday at Sandpoint.

Lake City (15-4, 4-1) plays host to Lewiston (14-5, 3-2) on Saturday in the 5A IEL finale. Lake City can wrap up the league title with a victory; a Lewiston win would create a three-way tie for first, and a tiebreaker would be needed.

SPIRIT LAKE — A balanced effort paced the Tigers in a nonleague rout of the Bears.

Five different players scored at least seven points for Timberlake (16-1), which won its 16th straight game.

“I was really happy with our defense and our rebounding,” Timberlake coach Matt Miller said. “Moscow is a strong team and we did a good job controlling the paint. Everybody had a field goal and our balanced scoring was great to see.”

Jada Simpson scored 10 points for Moscow (7-8).

Timberlake plays at Bonners Ferry on Tuesday.

ST. MARIES — Devyn Wilson scored 14 points as the Lumberjacks had an all-around effort to beat the Warriors in nonleague play.

“We were really emphasizing defense,” St. Maries coach Jay Sines said. “We tried to pick up the tempo to pick up some transition points. The girls worked really well all throughout the game.”

St. Maries, which won its fourth in a row, had 31 points off the bench.

Kaylee Auer added 10 points and eight rebounds, and Alexis Cordell had four assists and four steals.

St. Maries (14-2) hosts Kellogg on Saturday in the Brawl for the Ball.

Kootenai (6-11) plays Tuesday at home against Mullan.

POST FALLS — Max McCullough scored a game-high 29 points, Jake Pfennigs had a solid all-around game and the Trojans topped the Bears (0-11) in nonleague action at The Arena.

Pfennigs finished with five points, five rebounds, three assists and four steals for Post Falls (12-5), which won its fifth in a row. Cameron McKeown drained three 3-pointers.

“I thought our guys did a pretty good job of sharing the ball,” Post Falls coach Mike McLean said. “Our defense is getting better in each game.”

Post Falls plays at Lake City on Tuesday in 5A Inland Empire League play.

MOSCOW — Jared Walker had a couple of pins at 170 pounds for the Hawks, who beat the Vikings and lost to the Tigers at Bear Den.

William Edelblute (106) also won twice by pin for Lakeland, which competes at the North Idaho Rumble today and Saturday at Coeur d’Alene High.
