ELKS HOOP SHOOT

District competition: For the second straight year, the girls representing the Coeur d’Alene Elks Lodge at the North Idaho District Hoop Shoot stood apart from the rest of the competition last Saturday at Sunnyside Elementary in Kellogg.

Sophia Zufelt of Coeur d’Alene started things off for the locals by winning both rounds in the girls’ 8-9 year old age division. Zufelt shot a solid 7 of 10 in the first round. She faltered a bit in the second round, sinking seven of 15 but was still able to secure an easy win. Fiona MacDonald of Sandpoint finished with 11 points and second place.

In the girls’ 10-11 division, Post Falls’ Alexis Heath won her third trip to the state championships. Heath was a perfect 10 for 10 in the first round. After missing her first attempt in the second round, it was off to the races again with a 13 of 15 score. Wallace’s Britany Phillips was second with a final score of 10 of 25.

Completing the girls’ sweep with a win in the girls’ 12-13 age group was Spirit Lake’s Brooke Jessen, winning for the second year in a row. As was the case all day for the Coeur d’Alene girls’ strong consistent rounds put the competition away. Jessen shot 8 of 10 in the first round and finished with 18 points overall. Kellogg’s Gracelyn Nearing found herself in a first round hole when she hit only 4 of her first 10 shots. A stronger second round was not enough as she totaled 12 points.

The lone winner on the boys’ side for Coeur d’Alene was 10-year old Deacon Kiesbuy. Matching the best shooters in the competition shot for shot, Kiesbuy sank a blistering 90 percent of his first round shots. He was almost as hot in the second round, dropping in 13 points for a final total of 22. From the get go, the other three shooters were chasing Kiesbuy. Teigan Banning, representing Sandpoint, was the nearest competitor with a final total of 17.

Sandpoint won the other two boys’ competitions. Asher Williams tallied 20 points to edge Post Falls’ Steven Anderson by two points in the boys’ 8-9 group.

In the boys’ 12-13 category, Dawson Owens missed only one shot in each round to outdistance the field. Owens’ 23 points were three better than Kellogg’s Justin Taylor. Post Falls’ Josiah Heath finished third with 16 of 25.

The six winners advanced to the state championships on Feb. 6 in Caldwell.
