Changes to business honor local history
Brett Seright was born four years after his parents, Sandy and Nancy, opened their first hardware store in Post Falls in 1979, so he’s no stranger to retail and home improvement.
Now Brett, owner of the ACE Hardware stores in Post Falls and Coeur d’Alene, is overseeing the opening of a third store in Rathdrum.
The store is on the corner of Boekel Road and Highway 41 on a parcel of land that was owned for generations by George Thayer and family. Thayer, 92, has deep roots in the farming of the Rathdrum Prairie.
As the construction of the new store has progressed, the Serights sought to incorporate local history into the design. The front of the building is faced with wood reclaimed from an old barn on the property and some of the galvanized barn siding will be used in the store’s entry. On the back wall are several 10-foot black and white photographs reproduced from the collection of the Thayer family and the Rathdrum/Westwood Historical Society, including an image of the original Thayer homestead.
Times change, progress happens but it’s wonderful to see history honored in a most unexpected way.

I think most of us can agree that January is a most dreary of months. With the exception of New Year’s Day there's not much to look forward to, unlike February with the Super Bowl, Valentine's Day and Mardi Gras. March is the month of St. Patrick's Day and the first day of spring.
April is not so dreary although April Fools' Day can be annoying. May has May Day, the Kentucky Derby, Cinco de Mayo and Mother’s Day. June brings us Father’s Day and the first day of summer! July is star-spangled with the Fourth of July
and August needs no adornment — that would be like gilding the lily on those dog days of summer. September’s Labor Day and the first day of fall lead into October’s harvest moons and Halloween. We’re all thankful for November and then of course December.
January will be in the rearview mirror come Monday and that’s OK by me.
