NIC WRESTLING: A champion, more owies for Cardinals at Clackamas Open

OREGON CITY, Ore. — Sophomore Deondre Wilson won the championship at 141 pounds, but the injury-riddled North Idaho College wrestling team lost two more wrestlers at the Clackamas Open on Sunday.

Sophomore Dajour Reece suffered what was believed to be a torn meniscus in the finals at 165, though he continued in a 4-2 loss to Simon Fraser’s Tyler McLean, who wrestled at NIC last year. Cardinals coach Pat Whitcomb said Reece was scheduled for an MRI today.

And the Cardinals thought they had filled a hole at 157 with Phil Downing, who was wrestling unattached in this tourney. But in his first match Sunday, he suffered a high ankle sprain, and will be out at least two weeks, Whitcomb said.

“When I thought things can’t get any worse (injury wise), it’s getting worse,” Whitcomb said. “You hate to see these injuries mount. I haven’t had this many injuries in 20 years of coaching combined. We’ll be piecing them together for regionals (in three weeks).”

Wilson went 3-0, with a pin and a technical fall.

Damian Trujillo (285) finished fourth for the Cardinals

“Deondre was a bright spot; he looked really good,” Whitcomb said. “And a bunch of others wrestled well.”

NIC plays host to Simon Fraser on Wednesday for sophomore night.
