PREP GIRLS BASKETBALL: Lumberjacks clear hurdle, beat Grangeville in CIL play

| January 24, 2016 8:15 PM

ST. MARIES — In the first half, the St. Maries Lumberjacks did everything they needed to do to come away with a Central Idaho League win on Saturday.

That second half though, when nothing was going right, it almost cost them.

Kaylee Auer had 14 points and seven rebounds for the Lumberjacks, ranked fourth in this week’s state 2A girls basketball media poll, in a 42-40 win over the Grangeville Bulldogs.

“We were executing our offense and running the floor really well,” said St. Maries coach Jay Sines, whose team built a 27-11 lead at halftime. “We came into the third quarter, and just went cold and couldn’t hit the basket.”

It is the first win over Grangeville since St. Maries joined the CIL after the 2011-12 season.

St. Maries (12-2, 4-1 CIL), which hosts Kootenai on Monday, shot 2 of 17 in the third quarter as Grangeville cut the advantage to 34-27, eventually tying the game in the fourth before the Lumberjacks pulled away for the win.

“The girls just got back into it in the start of the fourth quarter, played tough after that and battled to pull off the win,” Sines said.

Grangeville is 8-6, 3-1.

“They were ahead pretty much the whole game,” Post Falls coach Marc Allert said. “We’re not executing our offense, we turned the ball over too many times. It was a bad combination.”

“We didn’t make enough free throws, which kind of cooked our goose,” Coeur d’Alene coach Dale Poffenroth said. “It was a great game and we caught up after trailing 36-27 with three minutes left to get it to 36-35, but we just didn’t have enough time to win it and they made their free throws down the stretch.

“We just came out very flat from the start of the game and got into a hole quick,” said Lake City coach Bryan Kelly, whose team trailed 12-3 after the first quarter. “We played solid the rest of the way, but we missed some late free throws and had some turnovers.”

Rewers also had seven rebounds and Bridget Rieken nine points and six rebounds for Lake City (15-4), which beat Post Falls on Friday in a key 5A Inland Empire League game.

“I think they kind of realized after this game that they’ve got to bring it each game,” Kelly said. “We didn’t have the fire and energy today.”

“They got a four-point lead,” Kootenai coach Mike LaFountaine said. “We fought but they went eight for 11 at the free-throw line. These are the games you want to play before districts, intense, point for point.”

Kootenai guard Hannah Whipple tied the game at 29 to send the game into overtime. With 11 seconds left in regulation and Kootenai trailing 29-27, Whipple drove down the lane, got fouled and nailed two free throws. Kaili Gentry scored 19 points for the Warriors (6-10).
