Don't get scammed this tax season

| January 21, 2016 8:00 PM

The Kootenai County Sheriff's Office warns citizens to be wary of IRS tax scams they may encounter this year.

According to the KCSO, the IRS will not initially call you. If there is an issue with your taxes, the IRS will send you a letter first. They will not call you on the telephone.

Numerous times last year, several residents reported receiving calls similar to this: You receive a call where the caller or recording states it is the IRS and that you should immediately call them regarding a lawsuit the IRS will be filing against you or an arrest warrant will be issued. The caller or recording will provide a telephone number for you to call. Do not call the number — it's a scam.

Another example is you receive a call where the caller claims to be with the IRS and asks for your personal information such as your name, address and Social Security number. This is also a scam.

If you filed your tax return and the IRS notifies you by mail, your tax return has already been filed and someone has used your SSN for filing a tax return. You will need to contact the "IRS ID Protection Unit" at (800) 908-4490 to receive and complete IRS No. 14039 form. This form can be found on the IRS website, www.irs.gov.
