PREP BOYS BASKETBALL: Lumberjacks appreciate win at Grangeville

| January 17, 2016 8:15 PM

GRANGEVILLE — Jake Sieler scored seven of his 15 points in the fourth quarter — including a key layup and 3-pointer in the final three minutes — leading the St. Maries Lumberjacks, tied for second in this week’s state 2A media poll, past the Grangeville Bulldogs 55-45 in a Central Idaho League game on Saturday.

“They had a ‘fan appreciation night’ and everyone from Grangeville got in for free,” St. Maries coach Bryan Chase said. “We were excited all the way down to play tonight and got out to a good start. We got into some foul trouble in the second half and they pulled to within a point, but Jake hit some big shots to push the lead back out. We had a great following too, and it seemed like an equally loud crowd on our end. The fans were really into it.”

Brady Martin had 12 points, seven steals and 10 rebounds for St. Maries (11-1, 2-0 CIL), which travels to Timberlake on Tuesday.

Grangeville, ranked fourth in 2A, is 9-2, 2-1.

Norris sunk five daggers from beyond the arc, including three in a row in a 90 second span in the third quarter, and made 10 of 12 from the stripe, carrying the offensive load the Bulldogs (4-9, 1-1 4A IEL), who used a 13-4 third quarter run to erase a three point halftime deficit and build a lead the Bears (0-8, 0-2) could not catch. Norris has scored 100 points in the last four games, one of four all-state football players that start for the Bulldogs.

NOXON, Mont. — Spencer Jeffres had the hot hand offensively with 22 points and seven rebounds, but a key injury, foul trouble and poor free throw shooting proved costly in the Wampus Cats’ loss to the Red Devils.

Hunter Boudousquie added four points and six rebounds, James Cope five points and three boards, and Conorey Vogel three points, three rebounds and three assists for the Wampus Cats (0-9), who lost freshman starter Wade Stevens to an ankle injury at the end of the first quarter.

The Wampus Cats led 7-0 after the first quarter, but Stevens’s injury hurt the Cats at both ends of the court and foul trouble kept leading scored Dylan Roper to just two points. Jeffres was a bright spot in defeat, doing damage from both outside and down on the blocks.

“He had four threes, but he just got worked over. There were no free shots underneath,” said Cats head coach George Thornton, whose team struggled to the tune of 8 of 24 from the foul line. “That just killed us. At crucial times we just don’t seem to be able to make them.

Clark Fork is at Lakeside on Tuesday.
