PREP ROUNDUP: Lawler, Kirby lead Timberlake past Lapwai
• GIRLS BASKETBALL
SPIRIT LAKE — Keelie Lawler scored 14 points and Allison Kirby added 10 points for the 3A Timberlake Tigers in a 61-48 win over the 1A Division I Lapwai Wildcats on Wednesday.
Lapwai, the top ranked team in this week’s 1A Division I prep girls basketball media poll, led 29-26 at halftime before the Tigers outscored them 35-19 in the second half.
“We did a little better job on the defensive end,” Timberlake coach Matt Miller said. “We shot 2 for 17 from the field in the first half, but other than that, we played a solid game. We were just a little cold to start the game.”
Timberlake beat Lapwai 65-56 in the consolation game of the Bengal Shootout on Nov. 21 in Lewiston.
“They’re a really good ballclub and have a lot of balance,” Miller said. “They shoot the ball really well, spread the floor, and gave us a really good game. We had some players out earlier this year, but we’re playing a lot better team defense right now than we were when we played them earlier this year.”
Timberlake (12-1) travels to Priest River for the Battle for the Buck spirit game on Saturday.
Koyama Young scored 15 points for Lapwai (12-2).
