ELKS HOOP SHOOT

A couple of familiar faces dominated the 2016 Coeur d’Alene Elks Lodge Hoop Shoot held on Sunday at Post Falls High School.

Alexis Heath of Post Falls won her third consecutive Waide Hamner Award as the top female shooter, regardless of age group, tying a record held by Zach Mackimmie. (2012-14), a two-time National Hoop Shoot finalist. Coeur d’Alene’s Deacon Kiesbuy won his second straight Hamner Award on the boys’ side.

Heath dominated the girls 10-11 year old age group, hitting her first eight free throws in round one before settling for a 9-7 lead over Karina Sande, of Twin Lakes Elementary. Heath kept her hot shooting touch, hitting her first 10 shots in the second round and 14 of 15 for a final score of 23 points. Sande cooled off in the second round but still managed to come in second place with a final score of 16. Bryan Elementary School’s Kameron Holzer rounded out the top three with a score of nine out of 25.

Kiesbuy was just as impressive with his shooting in the boys’ 10-11 division. After missing his first shot, Kiesbuy closed out the first round with nine straight free throws. Right on his heels was Westridge’s Zach Engelson, who made eight of his first round shots. Kiesbuy distanced himself from Engelson and the rest of the field by making the final 11 shots of the second round for a final score of 23. Engelson took second with 17. Dalton’s Andrew Karns used a strong second round to place third with a score of 16.

The girls 8-9 age group started out as a close contest with Sophia Zufelt of Skyway Elementary, Alaina Rex of John Brown Elementary, and Kyler Kirking of Dalton Elementary, all hitting seven of 10 shots in the first round. Zufelt, after missing her first two shots of round two, sank 10 straight to take command of the competition. She finished with 18 points for first place. Kirking was almost as accurate but never hit a groove like Zufelt and settled for a finally tally of 17. A big second round by Violet Andrews of Ramsey Elementary pushed her into a third place tie with Rex. Andrews emerged in the shoot-off as the third place finisher.

Steven Anderson of Seltice Elementary used two consistent rounds of six and 11 to win the boys’ 8-9 year old catgory. Trey Nipp used a strong second round of 12 to tie first round leader Peyton Burcham for second with totals of 16 points each. Nipp won the tiebreaker in two rounds hitting 8 of the 10 extra shots to Burcham’s 7 points.

Garwood’s Madison Wiedenhoff took the early lead in the girls 12-13 age group, making eight of her first 10 shots. Canfield’s Claire Evans was close behind with seven points and Timberlake Junior High’s Brooke Jessen was in third with six points. The second round caused a shake-up of the standings when Jessen made a strong move and hit 10 of 15 in the second round. Her 16 points edged out Widenhoff by a single point. A strong second round propelled Kendall Pickford into the final top three.

On the boys side of the bracket, River City Middle School’s Josiah Heath took an early lead and never gave it up. Heath finished the day with 20 points to beat Twin Lakes’ Taylor Menti by three. Timberlake’s Wyatt Dickinson took third with 16 points.

The six age-group winners advance to the District Hoop Shoot on Jan. 23 at Sunnyside Elementary School in Kellogg.

WRESTLING

Team Real Life wrestlers traveled to Prineville, Ore., to compete in the Central Oregon Classic Qualifier this past weekend.

The top three finishers in each age/weight category at a qualifier earned a spot to compete in the Oregon Wrestling Classic next weekend in Redmond, Ore. All three Team Real Life wrestlers making the trip finished first — Byson Huber, Brelane Huber and Roddy Romero. Their first-place finishes earn them priority seeding in their brackets at the Classic next weekend.

Other Team Real Life wrestlers went another direction and traveled to Montana to compete in two tournaments; the first on Saturday was the Helltown Throwdown in Helena. TRL placers were Damian Hamilton, 1st; Matthew Hamilton, 3rd and Rider Seguine, 3rd.

Once these wrestlers were done in Helena, some of them continued on to Bozeman for the Battle for the Bone Tournament. In this tournament many of the wrestlers competed in two different classes, their actual weight and the next heavier weight class. TRL placers were Matthew Hamilton, 1st & 1st; Damian Hamilton, 1st & 2nd; Devine Hill, 3rd and Elijah Easley, 3rd.

For more information about the Team Real Life wrestling program, contact Lonnie at 660-8579. Practices are held Monday and Wednesday evenings from 6 to 8 p.m.
