LETTER: An ugly impression

| January 13, 2016 8:00 PM

Freedom of speech is the pillar of our American values and part of what makes this country great. It’s easier than ever to voice our thoughts, which is evident by the number of opinions posted on online publications. Therefore, most of us look to our local newspaper to get information that is unbiased and more informative than what we see online. This was not the case when the Press published ‘Women: Clearly not a fan’.

Although Mr O’Key has the right to his opinion, there should be no room in a public newspaper for that kind of biased and misogynistic rhetoric. I would expect the editor and staff to screen the letters and opinions, and refuse the ones that serve no purpose other than to indulge an individual in their quest to insult a large part of the population. If the attack in this editorial was focused on race, religion, color, or nationality it would not have been published. How can an attack on women be considered a valuable editorial for your readers?

Although I have faith that this is not the majority opinion of Coeur d’Alene Press subscribers and surely not of the general public, I fear that the many tourists and part-time residents of Cd’A will. My hope is that Mike Patrick takes a deeper look at the messages he is sending to the people who live and visit this community and what impression they are leaving on their patrons.

HANNAH PALMER
